Fall Family Activities in New York

The Best of New York: Family Festivals
October 1, 2014
By , Families Contributor

With every ending, there's a new beginning, and this October marks the start of fall festivities.  As the air turns crisp, the scenery bursts with vibrant foliage, which is enough inspiration to take the family out for an adventure.  You don't need to go very far from New York City, or even leave the city at all.   Here's our roundup of where to take your family this decadent fall.

Applefest (and apple picking)

If you’re looking for a major attraction and fantastic family fun, head to the Warwick Applefest on October 5, 2014 (make sure to get an early start and prepare for some traffic and crowds--you are a city mouse after all). A tradition for over 25 years, the festival features craft and food vendors, farmer’s market, live entertainment and a children’s carnival. Plus, you won’t want to miss the apple pie baking contest. Your family’s secret recipe might be worth entering.

Looking for more of a traditional apple picking experience? Masker Orchards is for you. Masker Orchards is a go-to for family-friendly (you can even bring Lucky dog) apple picking destination in the Hudson Valley region. You can practically drive right to the tree with your family and then get lost in the massive orchard picking a variety of apples and taking in the views and foliage. An added bonus: For the kids, there are barnyard baby animals, pony rides and wagon rides. What more could you need? Well, the country store has the best cider as well as an assortment of apple, jams, butters, pies, and other goodies. And to make you the parent of the year stop for one last delectable delight on the way home: don’t miss the homemade ice cream at Bellvale Farms Creamery.

Fall Farm Festival at White Post Farms

Visit this family farm for the ultimate fall farm fun experience being held from September 20 to October 26. Walk into the farm and immediately hop on the tractor for a sing-along hayride. Jump off the hayride and land in the pumpkin patch to pick your own pumpkin. Find the pumpkin (or pumpkins) that match your personality and do the same for your family. Once your pumpkins are secure, head over to get lost in the corn maze, play on the slides and rides, and then top it off with a pony ride. And if that isn’t enough, you can find unique animal entertainment from the Muttvile Comix Dog Show to the Racing Pigs. It will be sweeter than pumpkin pie!

Family Party at the American Museum of Natural History

On October 21, prepare for a real life night at the museum when the American Museum of Natural Hosts one of its highly sought out family parties. Kids of all ages will be in awe of the behind-the-scenes tours, activities and exclusive access to some of the neatest exhibits in the city. If that’s not enough, there’s also music, dancing and special hands-on exhibits.

New York Botanical Garden Haunted Pumpkin Garden

Have you stopped and smelled the roses at the New York Botanical Garden and checked it off your list? Think again and plan for a fall visit to check out the Haunted Pumpkin Garden. From eye-catching pumpkin carving to the giant showcase of pumpkins –the largest in North America-- your visit to the Haunted Pumpkin Garden is sure to become a fast family tradition. During the visit the kids can run wild inside the Pumpkin House, create their own show at the Pumpkin Puppet Theater, wiggle along with the worms under a rotting log and even more tricks and treats. You’ll go batty!

This is just the beginning to the fabulous fall you are dreaming of. In the meantime, crunch an apple you picked, savor that pumpkin pie and enjoy the flavors and foliage of fall while planning your kiddo’s best Halloween costume.
