When you know, you know. Maybe you just didn’t know you’d find a hotel with that special something in Kigali. Kigali is the capital of Rwanda, and gateway to the lifetime trip of gorilla trekking, The Pinnacle has made Kigali a destination in itself. It is by far the top luxury hotel in Kigali. When you’ve stayed at the best hotels in the world, it’s hard to be surprised. But then, every so often, a nine-room hotel on a hill in Kigali comes along and reminds you that surprise is still possible. The Pinnacle Kigali is a hotel for the goals list.

Overview

Until my recent visit, the last time I was in Rwanda was over 10 years ago. I may as well have never been to the city, as Kigali has utterly transformed since. From the first visit, you could see the entrepreneurship and development happening in Kigali. It’s no surprise to me that the art scene is on the cusp of international recognition with the opening of the modern art museum, GICA. The insider clothing designers, cafes and restaurants are also a sign of what is to come for Kigali. Even so, nothing quite prepared me for The Pinnacle. It opened this past January as Rwanda’s first women-led ultra-luxury hotel. In the capital city, it is indisputably the top luxury hotel in Kigali.

Originally, The Pinnacle was built as a private family home for Rwandan entrepreneur Sheila Kyarisiima. We could (and will) write an entire feature on her accomplishments, from Goldman Sachs and Harvard to her entrepreneurial ventures. With the entrepreneur in her, she quickly realized a space this beautifully done needs to be shared. That’s when Sheila turned the family homestead into nine of the most beautifully appointed hotel rooms in East Africa. There are very few hotels that change the way you think about what luxury can look like. Not only in Rwanda, but on the continent of Africa, the Pinnacle is one of them.

A Hotel with Soul

I’ve stayed at plenty of properties that spent freely and still felt hollow. The Pinnacle is not that. This is spare-no-expense construction, paired with genuine creative intention. Once you’ve experienced that combination, it’s hard to go downstream, especially if you want the top luxury hotel in Kigali.

Atmosphere

Perched on Rebero Hill with sweeping views over Kigali’s green hills, The Pinnacle doesn’t announce itself so much as reveal itself, room by room. Each of the nine suites is individually themed and tells its own story. One is a nod to sleek New York City, where Kyarisiima met her husband. Others draw from her personal history and travels.

Walking the property feels less like touring a hotel and more like being let into someone’s very well-lived, very well-traveled life. Personally, I wanted to buy the rug and at least one piece of art in my room. I am selfishly lobbying for The Pinnacle to share their magic with people like me, who would travel to Kigali just for the chance to buy the design and decor. You could pontificate on the wallpaper selections in the baths as its own tour of the property. The Pinnacle concept could easily be like the RH of Africa.

For me, the art is what elevated the whole experience. The owner’s contemporary and pan-African art collection is personally hand-picked and curated throughout the property. This turns hallways and common spaces into something closer to a private gallery.

Then, there’s the amenity list. It reads like a creative brief rather than a checkbox. We’re talking about a saltwater infinity pool, tennis and basketball courts, and padel courts. It’s quite brilliant when you think about it, as the adventurous who gorilla trek generally like to be active.

For downtime, there’s a a full-service spa, fully equipped top of the line gym, a Dolby Atmos cinema, and a four-lane bowling alley. This is the kind of property that lends itself to multi-gen families who want to spend quality time together. Nothing here feels like The Pinnacle added it because a competitor had it. Everything feels like someone genuinely wanted it there.

Rooms

With only nine rooms hosting up to eighteen guests total, “hotel” almost undersells what’s happening here. Each suite comes with bespoke furnishings, a deep soaking tub, and handwoven textiles. Most hotels don’t focus on the fine detail of lighting, but The Pinnacle understands lighting is everything. Rooms are wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the city below. The construction quality is the kind you notice in the details. Even the local coffee in the mini bar and crafted snacks and desserts is thoughtful.

I loved that the individual room’s design tells a distinct story. You could stay at The Pinnacle multiple times and have a different experience each visit, depending on which suite you’re in. That’s rare in a property this size, and it’s the clearest sign of how much thought went into every single one of the nine rooms.

Food + Beverage

The dining program refuses to settle on one lane, and it’s better for it. Choose teppanyaki one night, tapas the next, or Mediterranean flavors on the terrace. There’s also contemporary Rwandan cuisine done in proper fine-dining style, all without leaving the property. The rooftop bar and restaurant overlooking the city is the money shot. Whether you catch a sunset, or in my case, a lightning storm, it’s a spectacular scene.

Service

With a guest-to-staff ratio this generous, The Pinnacle operates less like a traditional hotel and more like an extremely well-run private residence. The Pinnacle includes butler service with every stay, and in-suite massages greet you on arrival. The staff carry themselves with the kind of warmth that can’t be trained into someone. Personally, they had me at “mocktail,” when I was greeted with a beautifully presented green juice on arrival.

Overall, it comes from genuinely caring about the experience they’re building. It’s the kind of place where the team seems to know what you need before you’ve thought to ask for it.
