Beyond Napa: America’s Most Exciting Winery Destinations

Let’s be honest: Napa Valley isn’t merely the heart of American wine country; it’s the headline, the main event, and the afterparty. Napa Cabernets have humbled French châteaux. Napa Pinots have Burgundy watching its back. But, surprise: other parts of the country are making their vinous mark. And, the wines coming out of these places are certainly not consolation prizes.

From the Dundee Hills of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, to Washington’s Walla Walla region, and on to the Hamptons, you’ll find beautiful wines and wine tasting experiences. Napa, of course, makes the list. But the real fun starts when you venture a little further off the expected path. Here are some of America’s most exciting winery destinations.

Alexana Winery

Set high on the western slopes of Oregon’s Dundee Hills, Alexana delivers one of the Willamette Valley’s most immersive Pinot Noir experiences. The organically farmed estate unfolds across steep vineyard blocks and forested hillsides. You’ll find sweeping valley views at nearly every turn.

The winery’s signature Soils & Clones experience explores how 18 distinct soil types and 13 Pinot Noir clones shape the personality of each wine. It’s a fascinating exploration of site expression, elevation, and texture. For a deeper connection to the property, the seasonal Rover Tour carries you through the vineyard by electric vehicle. It ends at one of the estate’s highest points for a private tasting overlooking the Dundee Hills. Alexana appeals equally to serious collectors and travelers simply looking for an unforgettable Oregon wine country experience.

Echolands

Echolands has emerged as one of the most ambitious winery projects in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley. It pairs serious winemaking credentials with a remarkably cinematic setting. The estate spans hundreds of acres at the base of the Blue Mountains, and the focus is on regenerative organic farming and restrained winemaking that allows the region’s freshness and mineral character to come forward. Tasting experiences are elevated, without being overly formal. Each takes place inside the striking contemporary tasting room that’s surrounded by vineyards, wheat fields, and sweeping mountain views.

Wölffer Estate Vineyard

I first encountered Wölffer Estate Chardonnay at The Langham, New York, Fifth Avenue as it was poured in the Langham Club. I asked to see the label and was surprised to find it came from Long Island’s South Fork, and not California. That realization entirely reframed what the east coast (and specifically the Hamptons) could do with wine.

Best known for that crisp Chardonnay and its widely recognized Rosé program, the Sagaponack estate has built a wonderful reputation. Tastings take place in a modern hospitality space overlooking the vines, or in the vineyard adjacent garden, where seated flights are paired with small seasonal bites. Beyond the main tasting room, the Wölffer Wine Stand offers a more informal experience just down the road. It’s a walk-in setting where pours are often accompanied by live music. In warmer months, it becomes a social anchor for the region. Simply put, Wölffer mirrors its environment: relaxed coastal luxury, with wines designed for long afternoons, ocean breezes, and that unmistakable Hamptons sense of ease.

Crown Point Vineyards

Crown Point Vineyards makes a strong case that some of California’s most compelling Cabernet Sauvignon is now coming from far beyond Napa Valley. Set within Santa Ynez Valley’s Happy Canyon AVA, the estate combines dramatic scenery with one of the state’s most ambitious Bordeaux-focused wine programs.

My experience began out in the vineyards themselves, where we explored the rugged, oak-studded property by Jeep, while climbing through hillside vineyard blocks. Tastings frequently continue inside the winery’s dramatic barrel room, surrounded by rows of French oak barrels and soaring production spaces. We settled into a seated tasting accompanied by artisan cheeses, estate olive oil, fresh bread, and seasonal bites. The Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, delivers impressive layers of dark fruit, graphite, and savory complexity. Crown Point succeeds because the experience is fully connected to the estate, from the rugged vineyard terrain to the cellar, to the glass.

Aperture Cellars

Just outside downtown Healdsburg, Aperture Cellars delivers one of Sonoma’s sleekest tasting experiences. Founded by winemaker Jesse Katz, the winery combines striking architecture, acclaimed Bordeaux-style wines, and a strong artistic sensibility. Jesse’s dad is well-known photographer Andy Katz, and his photography appears throughout the winery and on every wine label.

The hospitality space was designed around the concept of a camera aperture, with dramatic skylights and floor-to-ceiling glass framing vineyard views across the historic Ponzo Ranch property. You can choose from several seated tastings. The wines themselves are delicious, particularly the Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings that have earned some of the highest scores in Alexander Valley history. Despite Katz’s celebrity clientele (including Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel), the atmosphere remains refreshingly unpretentious.

Roederer Estate

Roederer Estate has been producing some of California’s finest sparkling wines in Anderson Valley since 1982. The winery’s redesigned hospitality center makes a visit compelling. Surrounded by rolling vineyards, forested hillsides, and cool Pacific-influenced air, the estate feels wonderfully removed from California’s busier wine regions.

Founded by the family behind Louis Roederer, the winery specializes in elegant méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines crafted from estate-grown fruit. The tasting room, redesigned by seventh-generation family member Julia Rouzaud, blends California warmth with European refinement. It features reclaimed materials, terracotta tones, sculptural details, and expansive vineyard views. The outdoor terrace is especially lovely, overlooking Anderson Valley’s gently rolling vineyards and eucalyptus-lined hillsides.

JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery

Within Paso Robles’ western countryside, JUSTIN feels removed from the faster pace of California wine tourism. The drive winds through rolling hills, live oaks, vineyard slopes, and wide-open ranch land before the estate finally comes into view.

What distinguishes JUSTIN is the range of experiences available beyond the traditional tasting flight. You can settle into a vineyard-view lunch and estate tasting, explore the winery caves with a barrel sample of the flagship ISOSCELES blend, or sharpen your palate during guided blind tastings inside the ISOSCELES Library. Other experiences branch into culinary territory; enjoy chocolate-and-wine pairings with the estate chocolatiers. Walk through the chef’s garden or blend your own  tea. The estate stands out for creating wine country experiences that are multidimensional rather than narrowly focused on the tasting bar alone.

Robert Mondavi Winery

After an extensive three-year transformation, Robert Mondavi Winery has reemerged as one of Napa Valley’s most compelling tasting destinations. The iconic Oakville estate still carries the recognizable arch and tower that helped define Napa’s early identity, but the reimagined property now feels far more immersive and connected to the surrounding vineyards.

Indoor-outdoor tasting salons, landscaped terraces, and panoramic views create experiences that balance history with contemporary luxury. You can explore guided cellar tours, Reserve tastings, and the new To Kalon Collective, which showcases wines sourced from the famed vineyard across multiple producers. The restored Tower Library offers a more intimate setting, while expanded culinary and hospitality programs encourage you to spend time exploring the estate.
