What do we know about Venice? It’s a floating city that’s only accessible by boat, it’s packed with architectural treasures, and riding a gondola is a fun way to explore the labyrinth of its canals. One thing we don’t associate with Venice, however, is olive oil. That’s mostly because olive trees aren’t commonly found in the historical center. But Venice isn’t limited to the historical center; the city comprises no fewer than 118 islands, and one of them has an olive grove. The island of Isola delle Rose, a 20-minute boat ride from St. Mark’s Square, is the home of the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa and the extensive JW Garden home to about 100 olive trees, from which olive oil is produced every year.

That’s why in 2015, they opened the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa on Isola delle Rose, a late-19th-century, 40-acre artificial island. The luxury hotel is far enough from Venice’s historical center to bring peace and quiet to the guests who don’t want to be fighting tourist crowds, but close enough to get them to St. Mark’s Square by complimentary shuttle boat whenever the fancy strikes.
The five-star property has diverse accommodations on offer: rooms and suites in the main hotel, as well as in smaller buildings peppered around the island, including the Uliveto building, La Maisonnette, and La Rezidencia. For those who value privacy above everything else, there’s also a stand-alone, private villa among the gardens, Villa Rose. For views over the main appeal of this property, the olive grove, we recommend you stay at the Uliveto building. And if you time your stay well, you can even partake in the olive harvest in the fall.
Isola delle Rose Olive Oil
Every year since 2016, the olives from the grove on Isola delle Rose are harvested by local producers – and guests who want to pitch in. The 100 trees on the island produce around 100 liters of olive oil (26 gallons), just enough to supply the onsite restaurants and the guests’ cooking classes. Tastings are available and small bottles are gifted to select guests. Isola delle Rose Olive Oil isn’t available anywhere else but on the island, so don’t waste your time looking for it on the shelves of your local specialty store.
The JW Garden
While the olive grove is the star of Isola delle Rose, there’s a lot more to marvel at in the JW Garden. The island’s orchards and the kitchen garden, where vegetables and herbs grow, supply the property’s restaurants to create sustainable, ultra-local meals. Guests who participate in cooking classes even get to harvest the necessary ingredients with the chef prior to turning them into world-class dishes. But it’s not all utilitarian. There are also rose gardens and a large variety of tree species that provide shade, privacy, and refuge for birds. In fact, the island is so lush that it’s easy to forget you’re in Venice altogether.
