W Verbier: Alpine Playground

Come summer, we’ll find you in Ibiza. The beaches, the babes, Pacha; it’s a given. But the season eventually ends, and you’ve yet to find a comparable winter substitute. Until now. It’s out with the sand, in with the snow at the new W Verbier, opening this month in Switzerland’s winter party town of choice.

The resort’s 123 plush rooms, done up in local wood and stone, are divided among four traditional wood chalets, each connected by modern glass atriums. They’re perched on a sunny plateau alongside Medran, the resort town’s main gondola,so in lieu of beachside access, you get prime ski-in/ski-out access. Works for us. Each room comes with a fireplace – an alpine must – and a balcony, so you can check the slope traffic before even leaving your room. Or before even leaving bed, if you ask W’s signature Whatever/Whenever concierge to check for you. While they’re at it, they’ll be happy to help with anything else you may need, from the latest Apex ski boots to private jet service. You want it, you got it. (Legality is the only parameter.)

Michelin-starred chef Sergi Arola heads up the food and bev here, so at Restaurant Arola, expect Spanish-influenced tapas with a Swiss twist, like raclette with potatoes and pickles or razor clams on toast with Spanish ham. Dig in at the restaurant’s outdoor terrace while taking in the incredible view of the Alps. You can also après-ski in the W’s signature Living Room (lobby bar to everyone else). Plus, the underground destination bar, Carve, will likely secure the title of Verbier’s newest place to see and be seen. Get ready to hit the dance floor, because in true W fashion, they held an international contest to find a resident DJ, and we’re willing to bet that some of Ibiza’s top spin masters are looking to get their ski on. Speaking of, if you happened to get your ski on a little too hard, make a pit stop at Away Spa. The 8,600-square-foot facility boasts everything you’ll need to soothe those aching muscles, including nine treatment rooms, a sauna, Jacuzzi and hamam.

For the truly committed, consider snapping up one of the resort’s 15 residences located in two chalets adjacent to the hotel. You’ll get all the perks of the W – access to Sweat, the state-of-the-art fitness center, and Wet, the indoor/outdoor heated pool and party deck – plus a permanent home for your skis. Bikinis are easy to pack; skis… not so much.
