Rediscovering Boston

Barking Crab - Boston - Road Trip

Sometimes, you just want some chowder. Or you want to hop in the car with an excuse to road trip. So, load up the truckster and set the GPS to a place that has got some history and a guaranteed good lobster roll. Because whatever you’re into, the dark horse of destinations this summer is Boston, and this is your pocket guide list.

Sure, in terms of culture and food, New York City is the lodestar of the Northeast — perhaps the world. But if its nine million frenzied inhabitants are making you pine for a quieter urban outing, a Boston getaway is just what the doctor ordered. Rich history? Check. Affordable, vibrant, fun? Check, check, and check. From historic sites and world-class museums to scenic parks and family-friendly attractions, Boston has something for everyone. So this is what to do in Boston, for the perfect weekend getaway.

Freedom Trail and Boston Common

The way to explore the city is to take a walk along the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail. It winds past 16 historically significant sites that played a crucial role in the American Revolution. Along the way, you can see iconic landmarks such as the Massachusetts State House, Paul Revere’s House, and the Old North Church.

If, during your Boston getaway, you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, take a stroll through Boston Common. The oldest public park in the country, Boston Common is a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. You can go for a relaxing walk, have a picnic, or take a ride on one of the famous swan boats.

Kids Are Welcome

The Boston Children’s Museum and New England Aquarium

Got kids? Besides the history tour that you can make of the Freedom Trail, the Boston Children’s Museum is a must-visit spot for families. The museum offers a range of interactive exhibits that teach children about science, art, and culture. Additionally, kids and parents alike will enjoy the New England Aquarium. An excursion here combines fun with education, and offers interactive marine exhibits. The key is the museum offers lots of hands-on activities for kids.

The Harvard Museum of Natural History

The Harvard Museum of Natural History should be on the what to do in Boston list for all families. It’s located in nearby Cambridge and features an extensive collection of specimens, including a 42-foot-long Kronosaurus skeleton.

Don’t Forget Fenway

For sports fans, it’s not a real Boston getaway unless you catch a game at Fenway Park. Fenway is one of the oldest and most iconic baseball stadiums in the country. Even if you’re not a baseball fan, the atmosphere is something special.

Boston’s Food Scene

The culinary scene has always shone bright in Beantown. You can spend the weekend sampling the best of the North End. This neighborhood is Boston’s Little Italy, full of authentic restaurants, cafes, and bakeries.

Across the Charles River, in Cambridge, you’ll find one of Boston’s top eateries: Oleana. The Mediterranean-inspired restaurant serves creative small plates made with fresh, local ingredients. It’s known for its mezze dishes, like the smoked eggplant and the lamb dumplings, as well as its homemade bread.

If you’re in Boston, Oleana’s food is not to be missed

During your Boston getaway, you can also check out No. 9 Park. The restaurant is located in tony Beacon Hill and is known for its sophisticated French and Italian-inspired cuisine. No. 9 Park’s menu features dishes like duck breast with foie gras, lobster with squid ink pasta, and a range of artisanal cheeses. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list and a beautiful view of the Boston Common.
