The Rosewood Phnom Penh
Why we recommend it:
Although Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world, the opening of the Rosewood Phnom Penh makes a bold statement that Cambodia is serious about becoming the new Hong Kong. A skyscraper and the tallest building in the city (at least for now), the Rosewood is a symbol of both the government’s commitment to creating industry as well as the foresight of the Rosewood group that Cambodia has potential to be a hub of industry.
The Design
The Rosewood Phnom Penh is one of the most surprising hotel openings – partly because it’s in Phnom Penh (which until recently was provincial), and even more so because the hotel was outfitted with the highest building materials and design elements, befitting of a hotel you would find in more developed cities like London or Rome, and head and shoulders in design and room appointments, above most NYC hotels.
Amenities
The hotel is equipped with a Rosewood spa with views from the treatment rooms, a mani-pedi studio, a fitness center, a pool, and five dining options (and that’s just if you choose never to leave the hotel). When it comes to the food, it’s easy to see the degree of French influence in Cambodia. The croissants can rival any croissant in Paris, as can the baguettes. Gluten-free options are readily available too. The views from the hotel are notable, especially from the Sora and rooftop bar, which has become the after-work spot for drinks.
The Service
The staff at Rosewood Phnom Penh is world-class, made up of Rosewood veterans from the Paris property who really know their stuff, as well as largely locals, whose hearts are in making this hotel one of the best in Cambodia, and in the world. What we loved even more, is that many members of the staff are graduates of PSE, a charity that started their work by taking the most destitute of children, living and eating in garbage dumps, and providing them education and practical job skills to improve their lives. That element of hard work and heart is unique, and makes the service all the more notable.
