YOUR INSPIRATION TO EXPLORE THE WORLD

Dante West Village

Christine Drinan, Founder

Overview

We would say that a restaurant that’s been around since 1915 defines making it. And if you can make it in NYC, you can make it anywhere in the world. (Also another proven fact). Dante is a classic NYC institution, that’s been your go-to cocktail and coffee spot on Macdougal Street in the heart of Greenwich Village. Under new ownership though, Dante officially spreads its wings, with a second location in the West Village. The new location, Dante West, may just be even better than the original.

Atmosphere

Dante West is one of the prettiest restaurants in the West Village, both inside and out. Located on a prime corner of Hudson and Perry, Dante West is pure cheerful French perfection. The exterior is how you should do outdoor seating, with potted topiaries and flowers that frame the windows and awnings. The interior is a happy green that’s done tastefully in the style you’d see a French restaurant in Montmartre in Paris. There’s a nice bar for drinks that you can also dine at for a full dinner.

Besides the decor the scene is quintessential West Village with a local crowd to match. Dante West is where to eat lunch in the West Village. You look around and wonder what these people do for a living that they can hang out lunching all day.  In fact, Dante West is open for breakfast through dinner, so it’s a go-to spot for a casual bite and cocktails.

Food + Drink

The drink is as important as the food at Dante West. This is a cocktail bar that serves French Middle Eastern inspired dishes. You’ll find Shakshuka for breakfast and simple seasonal salads like a Halloumi with snap peas. They elevate the menu with a caviar and blini option, as well as a steak tartare. With that said, the food isn’t going to win a Michelin star and can trend a bit on the saltier side. However it’s always enjoyable when you take into account the full picture. Also their bartenders known how to mix up a cocktail, so it’s a good spot to stop before and after dinner for drinks.

Service

You’re not going to get a career server at Dante West, but you will get a team that tries their very best for you. The bartenders tend to have the most experience, which is reflected in the quality of the beverages. As long as your expectations are level set that this is a laid-back neighborhood spot and you can go with the flow, it’s all good at Dante West.

Overall: 7/10
