Twenty years ago, luxury hotels were generally a traditional bunch. It was almost on autopilot, where the formula was white glove service, classic décor, and formal dining. Then the Park Hyatts burst onto the scene and ushered in a new era of modern luxury. We would say the Park Hyatt Paris was a game-changer for the Parisian scene.
Atmosphere
With the benefit of hindsight looking back twenty years ago, the Park Hyatt Paris was visionary. They created a design that twenty years later is still modern, contemporary, and relevant. In many ways they were a pioneer in ushering in the modern design era of hotels, that has been emulated by other luxury brands since. What’s notable though from the typical modern hotel is that the Park Hyatt also managed to maintain an element of uniqueness and character to the Paris property. There’s an almost deco vibe through the rooms and hotel. If they were to gut renovate the hotel, there wouldn’t be much that they would actually need to change.
Besides the design, the Park Hyatt Paris continues to attract a chic and attractive crowd. The lobby lounge and all-day dining are always buzzing with those who both work in the area and are shopping on the St. Honore. I can stay wherever I want in Paris, but I still look forward to my visits back to the Park Hyatt. Part of the Park Hyatt’s superpower is its prime location in the Place Vendome. As they say, location is everything. And in the twenty or so year’s I’ve been staying at the hotel, it’s clear that its location is part of the reason the crowd stays solid at the Park Hyatt Paris.
Rooms
This is not an advertorial for the Park Hyatt Paris. I’m actually still bullish on the rooms as well. Back when the Park Hyatt opened, even the entry level rooms were mansions compared to the typical size of a Paris abode. They made the right decisions when they opened over twenty years ago on the footprint of the rooms. Another decision that was key was the color palate of the hotel, which are rich browns, caramel, beige and tans. Nowadays where there’s not a lot of character in the rooms, the Park Hyatt leans into marble sculptures and mirrors throughout. Whether or not it suits your exact taste, you certainly have an appreciation for it.
Top Suites + Privacy
The suites are still some of the top amongst the 40+ hotels I’ve stayed in Paris, especially in size and layout. My last stay was in an Ambassador Suite, that has three balconies, a dining room and full living area with two fireplaces. This wasn’t even one of the highest tier suite or apartments in the building. Speaking of apartments, the new-ish apartment at the Park Hyatt Paris has a Dyson air wrap and full Creme de la Mer products. It’s significant coin to stay there but in Galavante math you could really make out with saving on the hairdresser and face cream.
The hotel was completely full on my stay, but you couldn’t tell from the room floor and elevator traffic. They also have underground parking which for those who are public figures and don’t want to be seen coming and going, is also a bonus. It had been awhile since I stayed at the Park Hyatt, but I left questioning why I don’t stay there more often.
Food + Drink
The Park Hyatt Paris still has the best breakfast, where they focus both on quality and diversity of dishes. It’s almost as if everything from the petite croissants, yogurt with chia and fruit, daily quiche and Shakshouka are made with Japanese precision. It’s like they specifically chose each piece of fruit and cheese for the buffet; you don’t feel like anything is at all arbitrary. The made to order dishes are also qualities above a normal hotel breakfast. I had to control myself as paris is often a feeding frenzy of multiple meals through the day. Sunday brunch is still a total scene, where both local French families and hotel guests gather all day.
Of note there’s a garden terrace where I like to do meetings when the weather is nice. They have a Michelin-star restaurant Pur, but honestly I don’t spend dinners at the hotel. I do have a glass of wine/nightcap in the evenings, which tends to be quiet and what I need to wind down. The days of when the Park Hyatt was a regular evening scene have passed. You are though right around from the Costes which is always a good time.
Spa + Gym
The subterranean spa and gym are luxurious simplicity. I didn’t do a treatment the last time I stayed but I did peak into the rooms and the environment was peaceful. This isn’t like The Bulgari spa or facilities at the new Cheval Blanc, but it’s more updated than the other classic hotel facilities.
Service
I’m going to say something unpopular. I find places that take points generally mid-tier on service and their upkeep of the hotel. I also find the crowd not really one I want to hang with. The one consistent exception to this statement are the Park Hyatt properties. The service is as chic as the hotel. People are highly attentive and know how to service an American crowd, although it’s a Parisian and French staff. There’s an elegant polish yet a hint of friendliness and warmth. The days are past when the Concierge could pull strings for the hottest club in Paris or a table at the Costes, but they try their very best. I have no idea how they actually do it with 140+ rooms and their lean staff. The team is tops at the Park Hyatt Paris from all touch points.
Overall: 8.2/10
This is one of my favorite Paris standbys. It’s still premium in cost but it staying here lets me break the bank at Chanel down the street.
