Lymphatic therapy

We tend to associate the world of wellness and self-care with frivolous spa treatments. We think of manicures, head massages, and brow laminations. But more often than not, wellness and health go hand in hand. It’s certainly the case for the services provided by lymphatic therapy specialist, Munique Pacheco, owner of Manhattan-based studio Lymphora

Munique uses her extensive experience as a physiotherapist, as well as her specialized training to help post-operative plastic surgery patients, to offer highly personalized treatments to her NYC clients. Her Brazilian lymphatic drainage packages support recovery, reduce swelling, promote well-being, and encourage healthy physiological function.

“My work combines scientific knowledge, individualized care, and therapeutic touch to help each patient better understand their body while supporting long-term health, well-being, and quality of life,” she explains.

We talked to Munique about her lymphatic therapy and how travelers can benefit from her practice.

This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Galavante: Can you explain what the lymphatic system is and what lymphatic therapy does?

Munique: The lymphatic system is a remarkable network that helps maintain fluid balance, supports immune function, and transports important substances throughout the body. Unlike the circulatory system, it does not have a pump like the heart, and depends largely on breathing, muscle contractions, and daily movement. Lymphatic therapy is a gentle manual technique that may help reduce swelling, support post-operative recovery, relieve the sensation of heavy legs, and promote comfort and well-being when clinically appropriate.

How did you become a lymphatic therapy specialist?

More than twelve years ago, an opportunity in a hospital setting changed the course of my career.

While working at a cardiology hospital in Florianópolis, Brazil, physicians invited a group of physiotherapists to receive specialized training in the immediate post-operative care of plastic surgery patients. I volunteered to participate, working alongside surgeons and multidisciplinary teams during the critical first 24 hours after surgery. At the same time, I also worked in an aesthetic clinic, following patients throughout their recovery.

Those experiences shaped the philosophy that still guides my work today: Every treatment should respect the body’s physiology, support its natural healing processes, and be tailored to the unique needs of each individual.

What’s the go-to lymphatic treatment that you offer at your studio?

My practice focuses on individualized lymphatic therapy rather than standardized protocols. Every treatment is adapted according to each person’s physiology, medical history, lifestyle, and goals.

Can you explain how our lymphatic systems are impacted by flying?

Travel places unique physiological demands on the body. During long flights, several factors occur simultaneously: prolonged sitting, reduced muscle activity, cabin pressure changes, disrupted sleep, dehydration, dietary changes, and altered daily routines. One of the most important factors is immobility. The lymphatic system depends largely on muscle contractions, breathing, and body movement to keep lymphatic fluid circulating. When we remain seated for many hours, the natural muscle pump – particularly in the calves – becomes significantly less active. At the same time, prolonged sitting may partially compress veins in the pelvis and groin, reducing the efficiency of venous return from the lower limbs. Combined with gravity, this contributes to temporary fluid accumulation in the legs and feet, which many travelers experience as swelling, or a feeling of heaviness.

How about the other aspects of traveling?

Changes in hydration, sodium intake, alcohol consumption, jet lag, and poor sleep quality may further influence the body’s fluid regulation. For most healthy individuals, these changes are temporary, but they illustrate how closely movement, circulation, the lymphatic system, and overall well-being are connected.

What are your main recommendations to keep a healthy lymphatic system while on vacation?

Stay well hydrated, move regularly during long flights – walk whenever possible, perform gentle ankle and calf movements while seated. Also, prioritize restorative sleep, and maintain balanced nutrition. When clinically appropriate, lymphatic therapy can complement these healthy habits by promoting comfort and reducing temporary swelling.

What about frequent travelers?

For frequent travelers, lymphatic therapy may help reduce temporary fluid retention, improve comfort, and provide recovery from demanding routines. Beyond its physical benefits, it offers an opportunity to slow down, reconnect with the body, and restore well-being.

Do you have any recommendations for people to keep their lymphatic systems happy and healthy, whether they are traveling or at home?

Healthy daily habits support a healthy lymphatic system: regular movement, hydration, restorative sleep, nutritious food, stress management, and adequate recovery. My mission is to help people better understand their bodies so they can make informed decisions that support long-term health, well-being, and quality of life. Long-term wellness is built through consistency rather than quick fixes.
