Enter Spa de La Mer through the Baccarat Hotel New York doors on West 53rd Street. You’ll pass a live flame kept burning in homage to the French glassmakers, whose furnaces gave Baccarat its name centuries ago. Then, you’ll descend to a subterranean sanctuary that feels entirely removed from Midtown. It’s like a European seaside grotto sealed off from the city. This is the world’s only full-service Spa de La Mer, and it has introduced a treatment unlike anything else on its menu. The new Crystal Resonance Massage combines traditional bodywork with sound therapy, creating an experience designed to engage both the body and the mind.

Spa de La Mer Treatment Room

A Spa Built on Two Kinds of Refinement

Spa de La Mer is the result of a collaboration between Baccarat, the 260-year-old French crystal maker, and La Mer, whose Miracle Broth has become one of luxury skincare’s most recognizable formulations. Both brands share an emphasis on craftsmanship, artistry, and restoration, making the partnership feel surprisingly natural.

With only four treatment rooms, the spa feels intimate. Designers Gilles & Boissier created a series of vaulted, tent-like spaces in warm champagne and bronze tones that subtly echo the amber hue of Miracle Broth. Italian marble floors pair with whitewashed wood planks, while hand-painted sea kelp murals by New York artists Lynda White and Jeff Wood wrap each treatment room.

Custom Baccarat crystal sconces illuminate the spa, while a 55-foot indoor pool lined in black-and-white tile provides another place to unwind. Canopied daybeds surround the pool area, adding to the sense of retreat.

The Crystal Resonance Massage Experience

The Crystal Resonance Massage treatment room is illuminated just enough that the Baccarat sconces read as pinpoints rather than fixtures. Two practitioners work in tandem: a massage therapist and a sound healer positioned nearby with crystal and Tibetan singing bowls arranged around him.

The 90-minute massage follows a full-body Swedish sequence. However, it is the sound therapy that defines the experience.

For those unfamiliar with sound bathing, the process is remarkably simple. The practitioner strikes or circles the rims of crystal and metal bowls, each tuned to a different frequency, allowing layered tones to fill the room. The vibration is as physical as it is audible; you feel it through the treatment table and deep in your chest.

What makes the Crystal Resonance Massage distinctive is the way in which the two elements complement each other. The massage relaxes the body in a familiar way, working muscle by muscle. The sound reaches another level of awareness.

The bowl sounds gradually replace the internal dialogue that often continues during a massage: tomorrow’s schedule, unanswered emails, and the mental checklist that never seems to end. During the first few minutes, the vibrations can feel surprisingly intense. Then the sensation shifts. The mind stops analyzing the sound and begins to accept it. The overlapping frequencies and long reverberations create a full-body sensory experience that leaves you feeling restored.

A Signature Treatment Worth Its Place on the Menu

At $850 for 90 minutes, the Crystal Resonance Massage sits at the top of Spa de La Mer’s treatment menu. And bonus: Before leaving, each guest receives a Baccarat Harmonie crystal candle to take home. More than a parting gift, it serves as a reminder of the treatment and encourages moments of relaxation long after the visit ends.

Other spa offerings include the exclusive Baccarat Miracle Broth Facial, featuring a warming Victory Stone massage, an Icy Crystal Star technique, sound energies, and pressure point release.

The La Mer Body Treatment combines exfoliation with massage using the brand’s signature products. Traditional Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone, aromatherapy, sports, and prenatal massages round out the bodywork offerings.

The Grand Salon

Make a Day (or Night) of It

Rather than returning immediately to the city, consider extending the experience upstairs. The hotel’s Grand Salon, with its crystal chandeliers and elegant seating, offers afternoon tea, Champagne, and light refreshments. Nearby, The Bar provides one of Midtown’s most sophisticated cocktail settings. Both spaces create a graceful transition back into Manhattan. And better yet, book a room.
