Paris: Baronne – Where to be for the Scene in Paris

Christine Drinan, Founder

If you wonder where those who sit front row for Fashion Week in Paris gather for a nibble, the answer is unequivocally Baronne. It all makes sense, as in a way — it’s like the French society coming full circle. Baronne is set in the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild. As its name implies; Baronne is a former home of the Rothschild family. And it doesn’t disappoint— Baronne is as grand Belle Époque dining as it gets in Paris. We would go as far as to say: Baronne is on the short-list for the most glamorous restaurant in Paris now.

Atmosphere

To understand Baronne, a little history puts a lot into context. The mansion once belonged to Baroness Adèle de Rothschild. Think of her as the Queen Bee of Paris Society — which today, is the prolific group that runs the restaurant. Along with interior designer Corinne Sachot, they didn’t so much renovate Baronne for its opening in 2023, but rather restored it to its former glory. It’s everything you imagine a Rothschild home would be; frescoed soaring ceilings, marble fireplaces, and gilded chandeliers.

But the real showstopper is outside. Baronne sits on a 4,000-square-meter private garden. It’s one of the largest privately held green spaces left in the 8th Arrondissement. The garden changes the entire scale of the mansion. Centuries-old trees shade the terrace banquettes, and colonnades frame the lawn. In the warmer months, the outdoor seating area is as large as the indoor one. This turns the whole affair into something closer to a garden party at a private estate than a restaurant reservation.

Food + Beverage

The kitchen runs on a grill concept — prime cuts of beef, whole fish, and shellfish, all finished over the flame. But it’s not gunning for a Michelin star, and it doesn’t need to, given its atmosphere. Sharing dishes carved tableside is the way to go, which is like theatre, even once the plates arrive. The Wagyu beef burger with smoked cheddar is a crowd-pleaser. For my godkids under 10 years old, the buttered noodles and fries got the nod.

With that said, while I normally love the food by Paris Society (I think Giraffe deserves more credit than it receives), I found the food middle-of-the-road. I think they leaned too much into the beautiful room to carry the experience. I did love the little salmon tacos on the shares, which hit the spot. However, I found the zucchini flowers battered like a TGIF Friday’s. The egg and mushrooms with peas wouldn’t qualify as good anywhere, including Friday’s. Ditto on the artichoke salad. While the kids loved the fries, I personally would have expected higher execution on a dish that has “French” in the name. The one redemption was the beef tartare, which my friend said was one of the best he’s had.

With that all said, of course I would give up a godkid, niece or nephew to get a table during Fashion Week at Baronne. (Just kidding — although, I do have seventeen of the kiddos running around.) The point is, I would return anytime to Baronne, and enjoy whatever they put in front of me for the scene.

Service

Paris Society knows how to run a restaurant. Service is polished and attentive. We had children under ten in our group, and our waiter was patient and treated the kids as well as other guests. This speaks volumes, especially in a place this formal.

Overall: 7.8/10

If you’re into scene in Paris, Baronne delivers at a scale almost nothing else in the city can match. Come for the mansion, stay for the late-night party. The Baroness herself would be proud.
