The headline may not catch your eye, but when we tell you that both Aman and Rosewood are involved, well, our curiosity is piqued too. Throw in the Mandarin Oriental and $2 billion, and clearly, we need to know all about it right now. These are the preliminary broad strokes of Esencia, a new development in Puerto Rico by the Reuben Brothers.
Who are the Reuben Brothers?
David and Simon Reuben have dominated the private equity, development, and real estate world for decades. As the third-wealthiest family in the U.K., the Reuben brothers are no strangers to luxury. They have spanned their projects across hospitality, aviation, and technology. Their name sits on institutions like The Surrey hotel in NYC. Most recently, they converted Piccadilly Estate in London, which is soon to be a 5-star hotel in the heart of Mayfair.
But their properties don’t limit themselves to just the U.K. The Reuben brothers have a history of making smart investments overseas. Given the recent surges in tourism to Puerto Rico, it’s no surprise they have jumped on an opportunity to develop the island further.
The Project
Set against the stunning backdrop of Boquerón Bay, Esencia will nestle in Cabo Rojo, on Puerto Rico’s idyllic west coast. Known for its pristine beaches and quaint coastal towns, Puerto Rico’s west coast offers an ideal choice for a tropical vacation away from the frenzy of San Juan. Cabo Rojo boasts a diverse ecosystem, including its wildlife refuge and salt flats. For this reason, the resort will build with conservation in mind. The development will only affect 23% of the land, leaving the rest of the habitat as it is.
What’s in Store
The Reuben brothers’ newest project, Esencia, will span a 2,000-acre property. They’re bringing in the best of the best, with hotels and residences from Aman, Mandarin Oriental, and Rosewood. With five hotels and almost 1,000 residences, Esencia will mark its territory as the place to stay on Puerto Rico’s west coast. But the resort won’t stop at residences. Plans also include a bilingual K-12 school, two golf courses, an equestrian center, and a private airport. They’re not just looking to take you on a vacation, but rather encouraging you to put down roots and stay awhile. With the new project, they’re taking all-inclusive to an entirely new level.
