In honor of King Charles’ upcoming coronation, it’s time to get into an English frame of mind. Actually, it’s just an excuse to talk about a baller place to stay, that’s literally fit for royalty. Or at least for Winston Churchill. Templeton House was Churchill’s former home, but over $50 million later, it’s a pretty kicka** pad. The English have perfected the whole sprawling mansion on acres of horse farm thing. Just thinking about it makes us want to break out the croquet set. Or cigars, as Templeton House is Winston Churchill’s old abode.
Some History
While the Templeton estate was the residence of former U.K. prime minister Winston Churchill, its construction dates back much further. The southwest London Templeton estate dates back over 200 years. As you can imagine, it has undergone some wear and tear since then. Luckily, the Templeton estate just underwent an over $40 million restoration, on top of its purchase price of around $10 mil. David Rich-Jones and his wife Laura, who bought the property and financed this facelift, prioritized revitalizing the 18th-century essence of the manor.
The Estate
The Templeton estate is fit for a king and queen. Literally, because that’s who typically rents out the joint. These kings and queens come from such places around the world you can only guess. But also showing up at Templeton are insiders in the know who just really like extravagant homes. The estate is in London and a quick chauffeured car away from debauchery at LouLous in Mayfair. The beauty of the location is that you get the feel of the Cotswolds with 28,000 square feet to roam around in, yet, you’re right in central London.
The Templeton estate houses 8 bedrooms and sleeps 16, with opulent 18th-century decor and furnishings. Even amongst all this grandeur, it is intended to feel like a home which is part of why you won’t want to leave. And if you’re curious about the extent to which they are committed to authentically commemorating the historical spirit of the Templeton house, you’d be delighted to know that it was used as a set for Downtown Abbey.
Fun and Games
As far as outdoor activities go, two acres are at your disposal during your stay at Templeton. Complete with luxurious gardens and stunning landscaping which includes tennis courts and a duck pond. And, of course, there’s high tea and croquet all day.
