Inness, A Catskills Retreat

Where to Stay in the Catskills

Finally, we are starting to get destination-worthy hotels that you can drive to from New York City. (After all, not all of us want to feel like we’re literally at sleepaway camp just to get up close and personal with nature.) The Chatwall, Shandaken, and the Maker are among the reasons to expand your trips beyond the Hamptons this summer. Now there’s also Inness, a chic wellness retreat, set on 220 acres of pure R&R. Here’s the first look at where to stay in the Catskills now.

From Freemans to Accord, New York

Inness is owned by Taavo Somer, who also owns Freemans, a quintessential East Village restaurant in NYC. Freemans is an institution, with its carriage house set down one of the few alleys in the city. It’s always bustling, but somehow has stayed a cool neighborhood spot that draws many people from outside as well.

Inness is exactly the kind of place you would from expect the owner of Freemans. It’s rustic yet contemporary, and naturally encourages you to pull up a seat and mingle with other guests. If Freemans is any indication, Inness, which opened last year, will be where to stay in the Catskills for many years to come. Named after a landscape painter from the area, Innes is a Catskills compound with 28 cabins and a 12-room farmhouse. It’s a comfortable kind of place that looks like it’s been there for ages, but it’s actually totally brand new.

Summer Camp for Adults and Families

In addition to the rooms, there is a restaurant, a farm shop, a nine-hole golf course, two pools, and tennis courts. In 2023, Innes will open a wellness spa and gym which will also have a pilates and yoga studio. When the spa launches, it will be an even bigger reason for Inness to make the list of where to stay in the Catskills.

Then of course there’s the 200+ acres of property to explore, plus the quaint towns and lovely mountains nearby. For those in the community, there’s a members’ club that provides access to special events and amenities. Inness creates a community, whether you’re a weekend visitor or a local.
