What do you remember most from a luxury hotel stay? Maybe it’s a beautiful suite. It might be an unforgettable view or a remarkable meal. Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como tends to create memories that feel a bit more personal, and nearly impossible to forget.
Since 1910, Grand Hotel Tremezzo has welcomed guests to one of Italy’s most coveted destinations. The hotel is known for its floating pool, sweeping lake views, and old-world glamour. Yet what guests often most remember is something entirely different. A fragrance. A candle. A handwritten love letter placed on a pillow. These thoughtful details transform a stay at Grand Hotel Tremezzo into something far more personal than a traditional getaway.

The Scent of Lake Como, Bottled
Many luxury hotels have a signature scent. Grand Hotel Tremezzo tells a deeper story through fragrance. Aqua Como 1910 was created exclusively for the property. It captures the essence of Lake Como through notes inspired by lakeside gardens and the fresh air drifting across the water. The result is subtle, floral, and unmistakably Italian. It is the kind of scent that makes you pause and ask, “What is that?”
My own stay at Grand Hotel Tremezzo was nearly seven years ago. Even now, the fragrance is easy to conjure.
Guests encounter Aqua Como 1910 throughout the hotel, including in bath amenities. Many eventually want to bring it home. Fortunately, they can. The collection includes an Eau de Parfum, a room diffuser, and a signature candle. The candle has become a favorite keepsake among returning guests. Light it months later in New York, London, or San Francisco, and you’re instantly transported back to Lake Como. Suddenly, you’re sipping an aperitivo on the terrace, as classic boats glide across the sparkling water.
Few souvenirs create that kind of connection.

Shopping Like a Local
For guests who miss Lake Como long after departure, Grand Hotel Tremezzo offers another thoughtful extension of the experience. Owner and CEO Valentina De Santis, together with her mother, Antonella De Santis, created Sense of Lake, a curated boutique inspired by the craftsmanship, beauty, and lifestyle of the region.
It’s a natural extension of the hotel and a way to carry Lake Como home.
The collection includes Aqua Como fragrances along with fashion, home décor, and lifestyle pieces inspired by Grand Hotel Tremezzo and its sister properties, Passalacqua and Villa Sola Cabiati. Guests will also find collaborations with respected Italian artisans. These include Lake Como silk maker Mantero 1902, hatmaker Borsalino, luggage house Bric’s, and fashion labels such as F.R.S. For Restless Sleepers and Chez Dede. Many pieces are created exclusively for the hotel.
The fragrance collection has evolved into a Lake Como trilogy. Aqua Como 1910 represents Grand Hotel Tremezzo. Aqua Como 1787 reflects Passalacqua. The newest scent, Aqua Como 1813, honors Villa Sola Cabiati, the 18th-century villa managed by the hotel. Each fragrance interprets Lake Como in its own way.

The Love Letters
Then, there is the detail that feels almost too romantic to be true.
In the 1970s, a collection of handwritten love letters was discovered behind wallpaper, inside a secret wardrobe at Grand Hotel Tremezzo. The letters had been written decades earlier by guests whose identities are now lost to time. Only their words remain.
The De Santis family preserved the letters rather than archiving them away. In 2017, they transformed the discovery into one of the hotel’s most beloved traditions. Each evening during turndown service, guests receive a printed copy of one of these historic love letters placed on the pillow. Some are tender. Others are passionate. All reflect the many romances that have unfolded within the hotel over more than a century.
The gesture is especially fitting here. Grand Hotel Tremezzo has long hosted proposals, honeymoons, anniversaries, and milestone celebrations. Romance is part of its foundation.

More Than a Hotel
Luxury hospitality often highlights architecture, design, and fine dining. Grand Hotel Tremezzo excels in all of these areas. Still, what sets it apart are the details that resist easy documentation. A fragrance that follows you home. A candle that brings a memory back to life. A love letter waiting at turndown.
These are the touches that transform a stay into a cherished memory.
