Introducing Your Kids to Sri Lankan Cuisine: Kiri Bath (Milk Rice)

SRI LANKA CYJ Families - milk rice

Introducing your children to the delectable world of Sri Lankan cuisine can be daunting. Its complex flavors and spices can be overwhelming for younger palates. However, fear not! We have the perfect dish to ease them into this culinary adventure: Kiri Bath, also known as “milk rice.” This simple yet delicious dish is a staple in Sri Lankan cuisine and is the ideal starting point for introducing your kids to the vibrant flavors of this beautiful country. Here is the recipe for the perfect Kiri Bath (Milk Rice).

Serves 6–8

Prep: 5 minutes

Cook time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

2 cups long-grain rice

4 cups water

1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt

2 cups coconut milk

Sliced banana for garnish

Ground cinnamon for garnish

Procedure

To prepare the rice dish, add rice, water, and salt to a medium saucepan. Bring it to a boil and then cover it while reducing the heat. Cook the rice for approximately 10 minutes until it is soft and the water is absorbed. After the rice is cooked, stir in the coconut milk on low heat. Continue to simmer until the rice begins to break down and the coconut milk is absorbed. To serve, add sliced banana and sprinkle cinnamon on top and serve it warm.
