In honor of America’s birthday, it’s only right that we revisit the nation’s capital. Whether you live there or haven’t been since your 8^th grade field trip, Washington D.C. is pretty darned impressive. There are the historical sites from the Lincoln Memorial to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. But there’s also a top restaurant scene. So, this is your guide to the best restaurants in Washington DC.

It’s no surprise that DC’s food scene has become one of the best in the country. With a growing list of superstar chefs and Michelin stars laying down roots in the District, there’s a culinary experience fit for just about anyone. Whether your thing is French bistros or old school steak houses, we’ve got you covered. Check out our picks for the best of Washington, DC.

St. Anselm

St. Anselm isn’t necessarily a steakhouse, but they happen to do steak very well. The American tavern first opened in Brooklyn in 2010, and found its second home in DC, taking over a former industrial loft. The food is traditional steakhouse fare, elevated. Ambiance-wise, think tongue-in-cheek patriotism: taxidermy, American flags, and presidential portraits decorate the walls.

Le Diplomate

Since its opening, Le Diplomate has been a reliable see-and-be-seen kind of spot. It’s good for brunch, for celebrity-spotting, for date night– for pretty much anything. The bistro epitomizes all things French with its decadent food, vast wine list, and attentive service. There’s really no way to go wrong on a menu like this– from French omelets to duck sarladaises, feel free to order with confidence.

Barmini

A cocktail lab that doesn’t take itself too seriously. We know that sounds like an oxymoron. But somehow, José Andrés’ Barmini has managed to do it. Sure, the space is dramatic, as are the drinks, but the drama leans more towards fun rather than stuffy. Think color-changing cocktails, dry-ice special effects, and mixologists who bring the party.

The Dabney

At the center of Michelin-starred The Dabney sits a wood-fired hearth, cooking up a rotation of regional, seasonal dishes. Sat in the rustic Blagden Alley, the space itself is an old row house-turned-trendy restaurant, practically begging to be posted to Instagram. The Dabney is currently serving a 6-course tasting menu, centering Mid-Atlantic cuisine supplied by local farmers and purveyors.

Tail Up Goat

This Mediterranean hot spot recently shifted to a tasting menu format, highlighting seasonal ingredients. Founded by a group of DC food scene veterans, this is a restaurant that knows its stuff. Despite the sophisticated menu, Tail Up Goat itself is pretty relaxed. We’d say the ambiance is a step down from formal and a step up from casual– the sweet spot.

Minibar

Next to Barmini is its anandrome – Minibar. The two Michelin-starred restaurant– also by José Andrés– focuses on avant-garde gastronomy, marrying the culinary and scientific arts. It’s one of the most highly regarded culinary happenings in DC, known for its highly curated, highly exclusive experience. It’s also highly immersive– taking the chef’s table to a new level by placing diners inside the kitchen.

Rasika

Rasika has become known as the type of restaurant to put other Indian restaurants to shame– even if you don’t like Indian food. It’s been around since 2005 and it’s still tricky to get a reservation, which certainly says something. There’s something for everyone here, from vegetarians to meat eaters, to butter chicken devotees.
