They had us at the first glimpse of their fish and chips, and sealed the deal with theirs stargazy pie. From the team behind King is a casual rendition of the classic English Pub, and we liked it. A lot. This is a first look at the new Dean’s in NYC.
Overview
The opening of Dean’s makes you wonder why it took this long for a proper British pub to arrive in New York City. We’re not talking a themed sports bar, not a gastro-concept reaching for nostalgia — but an actual, unself-conscious British. Leave it to the team behind King to identify the gap and fill it with something that feels completely inevitable the moment you walk in.
Dean’s NYC is the latest from Annie Shi and Jess Shadbolt, the duo who turned a 24-seat room on 6th Avenue into a beloved standby neighborhood restaurant King. Dean’s sits right next door to King — which is, come to think of it, exactly where a neighborhood pub belongs. Where King is refined and seasonally French-Italian, Dean’s is unabashedly, warmly, proudly British. Shadbolt, who grew up in England, is cooking from memory here. Think oastal fishing villages, pubs near the water, and the kind of food where the fish came in that morning and ended up in a fish pie by noon. That personal investment is what separates Dean’s NYC from a mere concept. Dean’s is the new neighborhood place to be, even if you’re not in the neighborhood.
Atmosphere
There is so French it hurts, and with the arrival of Dean’s, there is now so British it hurts — and New York is better for both. There is no mistaking where you are when you step inside: the Guinness on tap, the close-packed tables and the hum of an evening that has no particular agenda. What surprises you, though, is that you’re still on 6th Avenue in SoHo, not at a local watering hole somewhere in the Cotswolds.
The crowd skews notably younger than the King regulars next door — by at least a decade — which gives Dean’s a different energy. Livelier, a little louder and dare we say a level up more attractive. But regardless of age, everyone in the room is buying into the same thing: the convivial warmth of a place that wants you to stay. There are only so many restaurants in New York that operate on that frequency. Dean’s, from the very first night, felt like one of them.

Food + Drinks
The food is the reason you come. Order oysters and a Guinness at the bar while you wait, if you can elbow your way into the lively bar, that is. The fish and chips is as good as the buzz suggests — crisp, generous, properly done. Though for the record, it’s not Dame, but then again unfair to compare the two. Dame remains in a category of its own. Dean’s fish and chips is a solid second, which in itself is an accomplishment.
The dressed crab on hot buttered crumpets immediately drew our attention on the menu. But on the night we visited, it felt a bit all crumpet, not enough crab. The stargazy pie — the iconic Cornish pastry with fish heads poking through the golden crust — is the table piece. Think of it as the showstopper you order for the post on the ‘Gram alone.
A Quick Guide of What to Order at Dean’s

Service
For a restaurant that just opened, Dean’s is operating as though it has been your neighborhood spot for years. Hosts are warm even while handing you a three-hour waitlist. Servers are casual in the best British sense — unhurried, genuinely friendly, never performative. The bartenders are working overtime to keep up with a crowd that has no intention of leaving early, and they’re doing it well.
With King as its anchor and that team’s pedigree behind it, Dean’s has every structural advantage. The opening frenzy will settle. The reservations will loosen. And when they do, Dean’s will settle into exactly what it was always meant to be: the neighborhood pub you didn’t know you needed until it was already your favorite.
Overall: 7.8/10
Dean’s fills a genuine gap in the New York dining landscape with character, warmth, and a kitchen that mostly lives up to its lineage. Come for the fish and chips, stay for the Guinness, and let the night take care of itself.
