The movie Challengers, if you haven’t seen it yet, is so good that it will inspire you to pick up a tennis racket. Or at least turn on the U.S. Open though we can say that Challengers has the better love triangle. Regardless, Challengers will have you smitten, whether it be with tennis, superstar Zendaya, or that kitschy T-shirt. You may not realize it yet, but yes you’ve seen people wearing a T-shirt that says it all: I Told Ya. Of course this isn’t just any random shirt; the luxury brand Loewe has debuted the I Told Ya T-Shirt Collection.
A JFK Jr. Inspiration
Observant viewers and movie buffs will tell you that you only need pay attention to the wardrobe and styling to understand each character. For the Challengers movie, the wardrobe stylist apparently took a great deal of inspiration from young 80’s and 90’s John F. Kennedy Jr.. JFK Jr.’s style was effortless. He looked good in everything from a suit to his bike gear. In that era, he made casual dress elegant — a quality that enlivens the love triangle in Challengers, making each character uber desirable.
In Challengers, a big T-shirt could disguise the status of someone whose tennis skills transcend their garments, or whose inheritance is widely known. This dualism marries the old money vibe of tennis, with the passion held by each of the characters, whose careers and livelihoods were on the line, depending on their skill at tennis.
While not quite quite luxury, T-shirts do the same wink and nod to what it means to have taste and class. And one very important T-shirt to Challengers could be seen worn on each of the characters throughout the movie: the classic ‘I Told Ya’ T-shirt.
And while the T-shirt itself is significant, so too is the phrase. The “I Told Ya” phrase references a shirt worn by JFK Jr. as a young man, which is thought to be a not to his father President Kennedy’s inauguration slogan “I told you so”. There’s a certain bravado that comes with wearing something that tells people you’re not afraid to be right. It was also a powerful statement made by each character as they took command over a particular scene or moment.

Now, seemingly everyone has hopped on board, with the famous T-shirt frequenting press tours on Zendaya and the rest of the crew. Jennifer Lawrence was even spotted sporting the T-Shirt near her Tribeca apartment in NYC. And to complete the reference now LOEWE has branded a whole collection after the slogan. Of course, they have the T-shirts for around $300 and a sweatshirt version in grey and white for around $690. Clearly to let everyone know you’re right, has a premium cost. Our opinion: It’s worth it.
