Best U.S. Lake Vacations

Sagamore Resort

The portfolio allocation of your family’s travels is all about balance. Maybe the kiddos already practiced their Japanese in Tokyo, and the fam did the European circuit. Now, it’s time to relax and keep it real. So, it’s as Americana as it gets to spend the summers with your family near a lake. Luckily, in the U.S., we have some of the best of them.

Even if you don’t live near Minnesota, a state that boasts 14,000 lakes, chances are that there’s a vacation lake close by that calls your name. How could there not be? The U.S. has between three and four million lakes — the smallest no bigger than a fishpond, the largest (Lake Superior) bigger than the entire state of Maine.

There’s something about staying near a lake that relaxes and rejuvenates us. The lapping of water against the shore, the call of a loon or a lonely whip-poor-will— it’s a perfect escape from the busyness of daily life. Whether you lounge on the shoreline, take a leisurely boat ride, or enjoy a picnic by the water, serenity is virtually a given. And when you’re in the mood for something more active, you can always get out on the water for some kayaking, fishing, or paddle boarding. Here are the four best U.S. Lake Vacations that should be on any shortlist.
