Road Trips For Families

Sometimes you just need to embrace your inner tree-hugger. And sometimes you need to turn off the TV, ditch the iPad and pack the whole family into the car for an adventure. Visiting a national park or historic site can be a fun way to connect with nature, and your family. If you’ve been looking for a sign to embark on a road trip, let this be it. Here are the best road trips for families in the United States.

Chicago to Michigan
The Trip: Chicago to Michigan

Route: Take I-94 E and I-169 N from Chicago to Saugatuck, Michigan.

This route only takes about three hours to complete, making it one of the best road trips for families with small children. It follows the most scenic route from Chicago to Saugatuck, as it takes you along the curve of Lake Michigan. It is especially enjoyable during early autumn as the leaves begin to change. Saugatuck is an excellent destination for families as it includes something for everyone. Family-friendly river cruises, state parks and apple orchards are just a few of the activities that await you there. Exciting stopovers along the way include Galien River County Park, Indiana Dunes National Park, Washington Park Zoo, and Silver Beach Carousel.

The redwood trees, pacific ocean waves, and fantastic stops along the way make this trip a smart choice for families. You’ll have the chance to see the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and take a trolly ride in foggy San Francisco, then enjoy the beauty of the Puget Sound and Cascade Mountain Range in Seattle.
