NIHI Rote

Travelers, take note: Bali is not the only Indonesian island worth visiting. In fact, considering how popular it’s become, it might be one you’ll want to avoid if you’re seeking a tranquil escape. Those in the know already jet off to Sumba instead, a more remote island where NIHI has one of the most beautiful resorts in the world. But if you want to go somewhere that’s even lesser known, head over to Rote. The island south of Timor is not only beloved by surfers, it’s also the location for the latest NIHI resort (open since May 2026). And you’d be remiss to pass on checking it out, especially if your idea of a tropical vacation includes white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and grand villas – all away from the crowds, of course.

NIHI Rote isn’t your average resort. There’s no rooms or suites, only villas – 21 of them to be exact. They vary in size — one bedroom, two bedrooms, or two bedrooms and a lofted bunk bed. And, they were all designed in the same traditional Rotenese aesthetics. Think wooden structures with ample light and outdoor spaces, palm-frond roofs, hand-woven textiles, and more. Each of the 21 villas has lush surroundings, allowing for privacy and an immersion in the island’s landscape. Every one of them also has a pool. But, if you opt for a beach villa, you’ll be steps from the beach so you can go for a wild dip whenever you feel like it.

While all the villas are gorgeous, the Ume Leo Beach Villa is especially eye-catching, because of its expansive space and direct access to the beach.

Wellness at NIHI Rote

If staying in a villa next to the beach on a dreamy Indonesian vacation isn’t enough to get you to relax, worry not – there’s a spa. And because it’d be a shame to spend more time than necessary indoors, you can get your treatment outside, among the trees. The treatment menu is on the small side. But, the offerings are unique and inspired by Indonesia and Rote’s traditional healing methods.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to spend your vacation lazying by the pool or sunbathing on the beach. In fact, it’s highly encouraged. But if you want a little more from your time on Rote, NIHI can organize a wealth of experiences for you. There’s surfing, of course, but snorkeling, paddleboarding, fishing, and mountain biking are available too. If you prefer something less physical, you can sign up for cultural experiences. You’ll learn about Rote and its inhabitants, including their language, their cooking, their crafts, and more.

How To Get to NIHI Rote

Getting to NIHI Rote takes some effort, which is a surefire way to keep the crowds of travelers at bay.

Two flights are required to travel to Rote. One commercial flight that runs only twice weekly (Monday and Friday) from Denpasar airport in Bali to Kupang in Timor, and one charter flight from Kupang to Rote.

The commercial flight between Bali and Kupang, as well as the charter flight between Kupang and Rote, are included in the price of a stay.
