Before you head across the country, there’s a place that’s more than just a flyover city. September in Chicago is America in all its Midwestern glory. And a bonus is that the Park Hyatt will be one of your favorite hotels in the U.S.A. This is the Park Hyatt Chicago review.
Atmosphere
When the Park Hyatt opened in Chicago over 20 years ago, it ushered in a new modern design aesthetic. Where hotels at that time were more traditional than what you would think a luxury hotel should be, the Park Hyatt Chicago was a disruptor. The hotel was once the crown jewel of the Pritzkers who own the Hyatt hotels. The vibe was sleek, modern, and minimalist, yet still Chicago warm. That continued, but around the time of the pandemic, it was time for a facelift to achieve that vibe for the next 20 years. The rooms got a complete gut renovation and the lobby and restaurants also received a nice soft update of furniture. The result is that the Park Hyatt Chicago again is one of the best hotels in Chicago.
Rooms
One of the most compelling reasons to stay at the Park Hyatt in Chicago is the rooms. They went above and beyond on the renovation, where the baths are a serene and luxurious cream-stone oasis. The rooms are modern but not cold; all rooms have a monochromatic theme as the base. However, many have bright-colored chairs and unique accent furniture. The other aspect that often gets overlooked is lighting, but not at the Park Hyatt. The hues and dimmers throughout carry through that calming vibe.
The result is that the Park Hyatt has some of the most luxurious and well-appointed rooms in Chicago. These rooms are also generously sized, even at the entry level. The suites though are where it gets really interesting especially when you have views of the historic Water Tower and Lake Michigan. I’ve spent nights ordering food and having friends over. My niece’s favorite recollection of our time together is probably at the Park Hyatt. One evening, I let them eat as much junk food as they wanted and even let them order pizza at 11 pm.
Food + Beverage
I’ve been staying at the Park Hyatt Chicago for 20+ years, and they consistently serve up top food. There have been many a lunch, dinner, and drinks that I’ve hosted. The breakfast though is notable, as it’s the power breakfast spot in Chicago. There are always interesting locals doing business over avocado toast and poached eggs. I know I’m a bit of a pain as I ask for a custom breakfast of miso soup and celery juice, which they oblige 99% of the time. They make still some of the top sushi I eat in Chicago. So I know that miso soup is hanging out to be served at lunch.
Dinner tends to be quiet but NoMi has won many an award for fine dining. The issue is that Chicago has top restaurants, so I mostly go out for dinner. The exception is when I have family on the garden terrace. This is always a lively spot and also good people-watching in the warmer months.
Gym + Spa
If you’re looking for a spa day, you’re better off going across the street to the Peninsula. However, if you want to lounge by the pool and workout with your trainer, the facilities are tops. Most gyms are bleak but not at the Park Hyatt, which is bright, airy, and has top equipment. I’ve brought in my boxing trainer on numerous visits.
Overall: 8.5/10
