John Travolta and Justin Bieber are hanging out at a castle and in walks Elon Musk… in Hungary? Ok, maybe they weren’t at the Castle of Tura together, but in the short time this spot has been open, they’ve all had a stay. Tura, a castle in Hungary located in the countryside outside of Budapest, may just be the place for your last-minute summer holiday.
A Castle in Hungary
The Castle of Tura is nestled in a forested town near Budapest with about 8,000 inhabitants. The newly renovated castle in Hungary features nearly 25 acres of lush forest, parks, and lakes. It was first built in 1883 in the Neo-Renaissance style by Baron Sigmund Schossberger. A historic figure with influence in Hungary’s economic relations, Schossberger had the family legacy to uphold, as he sat on the board of many Hungarian companies and departments. But, the castle itself was dedicated to his wife. The family initially summered there before moving in full-time. During its history, the Castle has acted variously as a home, a war hospital, and a primary school until it was declared a national monument. It has also been used as a set location for a few movies.
For a while, it was abandoned as well and it was only in 2016 that its current renovation was started and the Castle was turned into a 5-star hotel. The Schossberger family would likely not recognize today’s version of the Castle in Hungary. Renovations have reconstructed many of the original stylized ceilings, and corridors, such that the castle feels almost completely modern. However, the large entryways, dining areas, and surrounding gardens harken back to the castle’s original glory.
Location: Tura Park, Hungary
The Castle is located about 55 km from the capital, Budapest.
Rooms
12 rooms and 7 suites maintain a devotion to the baroque design but with fresh and modern takes on classic silhouettes. Guests can opt for individual rooms, or rent the whole castle — an experience modern-day royalty (aka the Biebers) can attest to. Some of the more opulent suites have private outdoor terraces.
Dining
Tura also offers culinary experiences featuring home-grown ingredients and a fine dining experience, worthy of a castle in Hungary. The breakfast-only Palmhouse celebrates hearty home-cooked food while the Clarisse restaurant offers a theatrical gastronomic experience. Clarisse has already received acclaim for serving delicate, castle-themed, and seasonally celebrated dishes. The dining at the castle in Hungary celebrates the feeling the castle should bestow. It’s a spectacle of color and artistic presentation through garden-grown fresh produce, and a history of culinary style.
Activities
Though the castle can make you feel lost in time, activities and amenities are far from dated. An outdoor pool leads the way to a high-tech spa with a gym, salt room, and steam room. Activities include helicopter tours, wine tours, hot air balloon tours, and access to the best Hungarian cultural sites.
Guests can relax in a bubble of tranquility while at the castle in Hungary. Or, they can do it like Bieber and host a show afterparty for the crew of his tour. Neoclassical and baroque interiors can set the stage for – as he wished – a superhero-themed event. In other words, the Castle of Tura is your oyster.
