Dancing With Maksim Chmerkovskiy

Maksim Chmerkovskiy might be best known as a Dancing With the Stars cast member, but the ‘bad boy of the ballroom’ has been dancing since the age of 4. Maksim opened a youth-oriented competitive dance studio with his father at age 16. He then went on to place 2nd in the US for professional dancing in the International Latin category. From the start, there was no doubt he was destined for fame. Some would say that Maksim Chmerkovskiy is a household name, albeit one that requires a proficiency in spelling.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy has been to competitions all over the world. So, it’s no surprise that beyond the 34-city Dancing With the Stars tour, Maksim has done his fair share travel.

We caught up with the 15-time “Dancing With The Stars” pro (and new father) in NYC to celebrate Swiffer‘s 18th Birthday. Read on to find out where he’s been, where he’s going and where he loves to sleep (when he isn’t home).

Hilary: You’re so busy – have you vacationed at all in the past year?

Maksim: I haven’t had one this year! I think our life is just a giant vacation, where some things thrown in there. We can’t complain. I feel guilty leaving.

Hilary: Is there anywhere you’re dying to visit?

Maksim: I want to go back to Asia. I’ve competed since I was a baby, and from about 15 to 25, I spend 10 years flying all over the world. There were months where I would be overseas four or five times a month. It was back and forth, whether it was Italy to see my coaches, or England for some big competitions. All over the world. When I turned pro, I did every Grandslam event. We had the same system, like tennis. We’ve been everywhere, including every continent. I would go as far to see that we’ve been to most of the civilized world. Europe is amazing. To me, my heart is in Tokyo.

Hilary: Where haven’t you been?

Maksim: I haven’t been to Southeast Asia: Bali and Singapore and all of those countries. Those are more tourist destinations. We never had money or time to venture out, but I’m looking forward to that.

Hilary: Do you have a favorite hotel?

Maksim: I feel amazing at the chain of W Hotels. Their bedding is incredible. I think my favorite, favorite hotel is Majestic in Paris. It’s a block away from the Arc De Triomphe. I love Paris for that.

Hilary: What are your must-have carry-on items?

Maksim: For me, it’s all about efficiency of flying. First of all, I get there 40 minutes before the flight. Hopefully someone saw me on Dancing With the Stars. I say, “Oh, I’m so sorry,” I take a picture, I do whatever for them to let me through. For me, I need to be able to – as I walk – go… put everything back on. You see people in the security line dressing and then undressing. For me, it’s not about an item. It’s about how the whole thing has to flow in and out. I think I am slightly addicted to buying headphones, though.

Hilary: How many pairs of headphones do you have?

Maksim: Over a dozen – for sure. It’s just not stopping. Last trip, I bought a pair of headphones I saw with wireless buds. They’re in-ear, and then you press a button. They have this cool, gagety-charger device. I have a lot of headphones.

Hilary: Well, we wish you happy listening on your travels. We can’t wait to see what you do next.
