For an exceptional Thanksgiving feast, consider brining your turkey. By taking this additional step, you will guarantee a succulent and savory bird. You will not need extra gravy when you serve up this main course.
Ingredients
Basic Brine
2 cups kosher salt and sugar
1 large brining bag
2 gallons of water
Optional ingredients to add flavor:
Bay leaves
Dried herbs and spices (sage, oregano, thyme, basil, etc.)
Cracked black peppercorns
Lemon
Orange
Crushed garlic cloves
Ginger
How to Brine Your Turkey
Start by heating a large stockpot over medium heat. In it, combine water, salt, sugar, and any optional ingredients you choose. Stir the mixture until the sugar and salt have dissolved completely. It is crucial not to let the mixture boil. Once done, remove the pot from the heat and allow it to cool for 20 minutes.
Next, select a container that is large enough to fit your turkey. Spread a layer of ice at the bottom of the container. Place your turkey inside the brining bag, breast-side down, and then put the bag inside the container with ice. Pour the cooled brine over the turkey, inside the bag, and add an additional gallon of water.
It is essential to keep the turkey’s temperature at 40°F while brining it. Therefore, add extra ice to the bag and container to keep it cool. Let the turkey brine for an hour per pound, and you will have a flavorful, juicy turkey to enjoy!
