Flan de Leche

El Salvador Flan

Flan, a delectable sweet custard dessert, has gained widespread popularity and has become a beloved treat among Salvadorians. Its versatility to complement various types of coffee and hot chocolate makes it a favorite amongst locals. If you are interested in making Flan de Leche a delicious treat, here is a recipe for you to follow.

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: approximately 1 hour

 

Ingredients

1 cup sugar
¼ cup water
4 eggs, beaten
1 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
2 cups water
¼ teaspoon vanilla
½ cup sugar

 

Directions

To prepare this scrumptious dessert, start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. In a saucepan, add 1 cup of sugar and water and place it over medium heat to caramelize. Allow the mixture to transform into a luscious amber brown color without stirring, which should take approximately 15 minutes. Once ready, pour it evenly into a 9-inch cake pan, coating the bottom entirely.

Moving on to the custard mixture, take a mixing bowl and beat eggs, milk, water, vanilla, and ½ cup of sugar until the composition becomes perfectly smooth. Once done, pour the mixture over the caramelized sugar in the cake pan.

It is essential to cook the custard in a water bath. To do so, place the cake pan inside a deep roasting pan, and fill the latter with warm water until it comes about halfway up the sides of the cake pan.

Bake for approximately 45 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Once done, remove from the oven and chill for at least an hour. When ready to serve, invert the custard onto a plate, slice, and enjoy this delectable treat!
