Since this is a pretty glamorous issue, we thought we would revisit caviar. Because why not? Caviar, yes, is still a luxury, but it’s a luxury within reach. Also, there are California- and Uruguay-based caviar companies that rival their Caspian Sea cousins. Here’s the list of the best caviar brands for your splurge.
Roe
Roe is our go-to brand to gift, because we received it once and loved it. The packaging makes it a fun gift, with its wooden box that can be repurposed as storage. There are also blini and potato chip add-ons. The kicker though that put this on the caviar list is the caviar key it comes with. Anyone who has every tried to open a tin knows that it can be a challenge to get the tin open. As a starter caviar, Roe is a nice host gift or gift to yourself. The only downside is the cost of shipping, which is around $50 in the U.S.
Where it’s from: Roe is sustainably farmed by aquaculture in California.

Black River Caviar
The distinction of Black River is it’s farm to spoon. It makes the list because it’s the caviar that you know is fresh from the moment you open it up. Unlike the grocery store caviars that are oily and discolored, Black River’s caviar are beautiful pearls. We like this caviar as it’s a crowd-pleaser for home dinner parties, and if you’re a baller, for parties where guests can help themselves. Of course their higher tier within the line, the Master Selection, is the best of all. However, for everyday caviar (if that’s your thing) the entry-level Royale Selection won’t break the bank at around $92 for 20 grams.
Where it’s from: A beautiful farm in Uruguay. Anyone who has ever been to the countryside of Uruguay at least first with the idea of moving there.

Kolikof Caviar
We have this one on our caviar list because we are obsessed with Chef Miles Angelo at Caribou Club in Aspen. He makes the most impossibly dainty canapes, many of which are caviar-based. Yes, we stalked his Instagram page to find out who his guy is for caviar, and lately it’s been this brand. Kolikof is also served on Air France and at the Four Seasons, so they’re as decorated as it comes.
Where it’s from: Russia. Enough said.

Aquatir Caviar
This is a unique brand on the caviar list, because it’s not made on a caviar farm. In fact, if there’s a scientific approach to caviar, it’s the Aquatic method. Their caviar is made in a lab-like facility and sourced in sturgeon farms from Moldova. Their process uses only salt and no preservatives, antibiotics or GMOs. So while there’s technically no such category as an “organic” caviar, this is close.
