The Mark: The Upper East Side’s Power Address

You’ve no doubt seen it in photographs. Each May, couture and camera flashes line the entrance as the Met Gala crowd gathers on its front steps. However, The Mark’s appeal runs deeper than a single night of fashion theater. This iconic NYC hotel refines indulgence into something seamless and instinctive.

The Address

The Mark sits at the corner of East 77th Street and Madison Avenue. From here, you have prime Upper East Side positioning. Central Park is a short walk west, and Museum Mile stretches just north. The surrounding blocks feature flagship boutiques and polished townhouses. As a result, the neighborhood carries a sense of discretion that defines this part of Manhattan. You remain close to the city’s cultural anchors. At the same time, you feel removed from its frenetic pace.

Statement Design

The building dates to 1927. However, its current identity comes from French designer Jacques Grange. He reimagined the hotel with a graphic, high-contrast sensibility. For example, black-and-white floors and bold lines anchor the look. At the same time, curated art softens the effect. The aesthetic reads as Parisian polish translated for New York. It feels confident, edited, and unmistakably chic.

The Social Core

The Mark has earned a reputation as a gathering place. Notably, that extends beyond Met Gala week. The lobby and adjacent Mark Bar function as an informal salon. Here, fashion insiders, financiers, and well-heeled travelers meet over cocktails. In addition, there’s always the possibility of spotting a notable face across the room. Just don’t react too strongly. If you’re here, you’re already part of the “in” crowd.

Rooms and Suites

Guest rooms feel spacious by Manhattan standards. In addition, the design leans into calm neutrals. Tailored furnishings and Italian linens create an easy sense of luxury. Bathrooms feature marble finishes, deep soaking tubs, and separate showers. They also include heated towel racks, monogrammed textiles, and mirrored televisions.

Suites extend that residential approach. For example, living rooms include velvet seating and Art Deco accents. Kitchens come fully equipped. The hotel also designs layouts for actual living, not just short stays. As a result, settling in feels natural.

At the top of the hotel sits the Mark Penthouse, the largest in the United States. It spans two floors and more than 10,000 square feet. Inside, there are five bedrooms and multiple entertaining spaces. Fireplaces add warmth throughout. In addition, a private terrace overlooks Central Park and the skyline. During colder months, the terrace converts into a private ice rink, an unexpected and over-the-top feature that underscores the property’s commitment to the extraordinary.

Service, Precisely Executed

What distinguishes The Mark is not only its design, or the bespoke, whimsical narrations by French artist Jean-Philippe Delhomme, or even its address. It’s the service. The concierge team functions as if just for you, arranging everything from last-minute tailoring at Bergdorf Goodman to in-room spa treatments. There’s a Frédéric Fekkai salon on-site, and even a John Lobb shoeshine service.

Families and pets receive the same level of attention. For example, in-suite slumber parties include custom tents, movies, and curated treats. Pets are welcome; they receive dedicated amenities and a tailored menu.

Amenities with Personality

The Mark avoids a standard hotel playbook. Instead, it offers experiences that feel specific to the property. For example, a Jean-Georges Vongerichten gourmet hot dog cart sits just outside the entrance. Guests can also use a branded pedicab. And, a fleet of e-bikes makes exploring the neighborhood easy.

The hotel extends its reach into the city. Picnics in Central Park feature Jean-Georges-driven menus and carefully packed baskets. Meanwhile, private sails take place aboard a 70-foot Herreshoff vessel. These experiences include dining and caviar service on the water. As a result, the amenities feel both playful and elevated.

Dining

Cuisine plays a central role in any stay. The Mark Restaurant, led by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, blends European technique with global influence. The setting encourages a see-and-be-seen atmosphere. There is a dimly lit dining room, along with a skylit atrium.

In addition, Caviar Kaspia at The Mark brings a Parisian sensibility to Manhattan. Its design references the original Left Bank location. The menu focuses on its namesake delicacy.

Guests often structure their day around meals. For example, breakfast may arrive in bed. Lunch might unfold at Kaspia. Later, oysters and rosé appear at the seasonal clam bar. Even a simple order feels considered.
