Scarpetta is likely on your radar. But, if it’s not on your rotation, Scarpetta may be the spot for your next Sunday night girls night. The new Sunday Supper series features a classically Italian prix fixe feast that highlights the quality Scarpetta is known for in a deliciously family style orientation.
Atmosphere
Throughout the nearly two decades of service, Scarpetta has gone through different phases. LDV management has branded the restaurant expertly. It’s not too over the top, but you can tell that you’re going to be well taken care of. And the Sunday night crowd of New York’s finest families, couple friend groups, and gen-Z newcomers to the corporate world are cleanly pressed, and happy to be there. It’s almost a happy medium between being a neighborhood spot, and the place you reserve for a special occasion – maybe for your mother-in-law’s birthday, or a team celebration.
Food + Beverage
The Sunday Supper itself is a solid, dependable meal. The restaurant flexes in the bread basket which comes with a sumptuous tomato spread and mascarpone. There’s also an impressive list of wine to choose from, and the first glass included in the Supper is a nice addition. The charred caesar salad could have been more charred, although an appropriate portion of pasta with their signature award-winning sauce during the entré course makes up for any shortcuts taken during the apps.
The veal milanese comes well cooked, and presented beautifully in the center of your table. Our cut came with a nice balance of thin and crispy edge and a juicier interior. All kinds of milanese lovers will be happy, even if the effort to slice off a piece from the family-style plate becomes a bit difficult while tipsy. The portions, while filling, are just slight enough that the cheesecake does not feel overly indulgent. And, for what may be a Sunday-night cheat night, is a dreamy way to round out the meal.
Service
As for the service, it’s hard to complain. Though the hostesses were young – they brought us to the table before it had been set – they were polite, and the quality of service increased to near perfection over the course of the evening. Our server was highly attentive, and my glass of wine was never empty for more than two minutes. The runners also discreetly exchanged our silverware, almost without us noticing.
Rating: 7.5/10
Scarpetta is an NYC mainstay, which is hard to do. You can trust that you will be well fed and taken care of, and that you’ll find yourself amongst a lively crowd. For $75 per person, the Sunday Supper doesn’t break the bank, either. Especially when considering that your wine is included. You might not be blown away by creative flavors, but you can count on a really decent meal that will please most everyone.
