The EDITION Reykjavik

edition reykjavik

If you’ve ever been to Iceland, you know it left much to be desired in terms of hotels. In fact, if there was a city whose sky-high prices had an inverse relationship to quality, Reykjavík was it. Until now, maybe, because the EDITION has landed — a luxury hotel in Reykjavik. Here’s the preview that may just inspire a trip.

The Details:

Just outside of Old Harbor Port, the 253-room Reykjavík luxury hotel is well within the city center. But it’s not so central you’re going to hear the all-night revelry. (Trust us, even the most patient person will yell out a window at 4 a.m. asking people to please pipe down.) The hotel is not far from the Harpa concert hall, where the views can’t be beat. It’s also just a five-minute walk to the clubs and the main shopping area. But nothing in the city is too far from the wild environment that makes Iceland such a destination.

A Nod to Nature

This luxury hotel in Reykjavík is a nod to the Iceland’s unique nature. Design-wise, there’s shou-sugi-ban timber to mimic the volcanic landscape, and a totem sculpture representing the Icelandic cairns. There’s something almost Arjé-inspired about the look and feel. Local architectural firm T.ark and NYC-based Roman and Williams helmed the design of the EDITION. The result is a blend of classic and sophisticated-modern design influences in this latest, um, EDITION hotel…and a distinctly regional flare.

High End, Laid-Back Dining at this Luxury Hotel in Reykjavík

Michelin-starred restauranteur Gunnar Karl Gíslason of Dill oversees the EDITION’s restaurant, Tides. Over the past decade, Dill has been one of the best gourmet restaurants in Reykjavík. In this tasteful space, the EDITION combines high-end tasting menus with laid-back, unpretentious service. All signs say that Tides will give you the experience you expect from a luxury hotel in Reykjavík, starting with impeccable service that is seamless and welcoming. In addition to delicious fresh pastries, the chef shows off his chops with modern takes on Icelandic classics like stuffed Arctic char (similar to salmon, but lighter).

Time to Spa

As per the new norm, some of the spaces in the hotel are subject to closure if COVID guidelines deem it necessary. But if all is well, the hotel has a geothermal and hydrotherapy plunge pool, as well as a hammam spa. Just as delightful: there’s a bar specializing in vodka infusions, right near the pool.

Don’t Forget the Northern Lights

While the city is great for entertainment, we have some recommendations for a place just outside where you can see the Northern Lights. Getting pampered in Reykjavík, getting starstruck in the countryside: now you don’t have to choose.
