The Middle East is hands down becoming one of the most luxurious places to vacation. They’ll do anything, including creating storms to cool down the weather, which makes putting in a luxury train in the middle of the desert not that big of a deal. That is, until you see the plans for this next-level way to see this part of the world.

The Dream of the Desert train’s design and ambition position it closer to the realm of luxury hotels than standard trains. Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and Italian hospitality group Arsenale S.p.A. designed the train to immerse passengers in breathtaking landscapes. What’s more, is that it also forms a key component of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, the Kingdom’s ambitious plan to expand tourism and diversify its economy.

The train’s final design emerged in January 2025. This coincided with a visit from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, highlighting the strengthening relationship between Saudi Arabia and Italy.

Design

The Dream of the Desert train consists of 14 carriages and houses 34 luxury suites. Each features earthy tones, rich textiles, and handcrafted details inspired by Saudi heritage.

The interiors, led by Aline Asmar d’Amman and her firm Culture in Architecture, draw inspiration from Madain Saleh, Hegra, and Hail. Naturally, they weave traditional motifs into every detail. From saddle-stitched leather to marquetry and Arabian tack-inspired curtain ties.

Public spaces are equally refined. As you can imagine, the reception lounges echo the traditional majlis, with low, inviting seating. The bar area features geometric patterns, tiled finishes, and soft lighting, creating a calm, intimate atmosphere.

The Route

The Dream of the Desert will follow a 1,300-kilometer route, departing from Riyadh and traveling north to Al Qurayyat, near the Jordanian border.

Along the way, passengers will experience some of Saudi Arabia’s impressive heritage sites. Curated cultural programs stem from a collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Saudi Tourism Authority.

Of course, this train isn’t just about getting from Point A to Point B. It’s about experiencing Saudi Arabia in a way that’s immersive, sensory, and deeply personal. From Arabic coffee served onboard to watching the desert light shift gently across the dunes, every detail works to slow down time and elevate the journey.

As the Dream of the Desert prepares for its maiden voyage, it signals an innovative future for luxury exploration. This pioneering five-star rail experience will offer a profound immersion into Saudi Arabia’s culture and breathtaking scenery, cementing its place as a landmark development in global tourism.
