The Frick is back, and it’s better than ever. Having undergone a dazzling makeover, this NYC gem is reopening its doors after a five-year closure, blending historic charm with a fresh renovation and expansion. Everyone is excited: art history enthusiasts who value the preservation of historic sites, New Yorkers who cherish The Frick as a cultural landmark, researchers who will have access to improved library and research facilities, and tourists who have yet to see The Frick Collection.

Mark your calendars for April 17, to once again immerse yourself in art, elegance, and a whole new Frick experience. This is all you need to know about the reopening of the Frick.

What is The Frick Collection?

The Frick Collection is a must-see for anyone visiting New York City. It’s a treasure trove of European and decorative arts, combined with a renowned research library. Henry Clay Frick, the industrialist, philanthropist, and art collector established the collection — which is now housed in his former mansion. It includes masterpieces by artists like Bellini, Fragonard, Rembrandt, and Vermeer — so the Frick Collection is a chance to encounter these works firsthand.

The collection spans from the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century and includes not only paintings, but also sculptures, furniture, and decorative arts, providing a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Gilded Age.

About The Renovation

The Frick closed in 2020 for a major renovation and expansion. The primary goal was to preserve and enhance its historic Fifth Avenue building, while addressing some long-needed infrastructure and operational updates. Selldorf Architects (with Beyer Blinder Belle as executive architect) were tasked with the delicate balance of honoring the Frick’s legacy, while creating a more accessible and welcoming experience for 21st-century visitors. Selldorf’s design emphasizes natural light and a more intuitive flow through the building. This is the most extensive renovation since 1935, offering the public unprecedented access to previously private spaces within the Frick mansion, and a glimpse into its past.

Why Is This Important?

The Frick’s reopening is significant for anyone interested in art, history, or New York City culture (so, everyone). The renovation preserves the historic character of the building while ensuring its vibrancy for future generations, with modern amenities and increased space for exploration. The expansion also allows for the display of more of the collection (some of which has been in storage), as well as dedicated space for special exhibitions.

The renovation has restored the historic first-floor galleries and created new galleries on the second floor, opening these previously private spaces to the public. The restored 70th Street Garden can also now be viewed from several points within the building, and this tranquil urban oasis is more integrated into the visitor experience.

Special Events

The Frick is also pulling out all the stops for its reopening, with a diverse array of special events and programs. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Spring Music Festival: The newly inaugurated Stephen A. Schwarzman Auditorium will host a two-week music festival from April 26 through May 11, 2025. This festival will feature both classical and contemporary music performances, enriching the Frick’s programming and offering visitors a diverse musical experience.
  • Special Installations: The inaugural season will include special installations, such as a presentation of porcelain flowers by sculptor Vladimir Kanevsky. This installation pays homage to the floral arrangements made for the Frick’s original opening in 1935.
  • Exhibition of Vermeer’s Love Letters: The museum’s new first-floor special exhibition galleries will debut with “Vermeer’s Love Letters” from June 18 through September 8, 2025. This exhibition will unite three iconic paintings by Vermeer, focusing on the motif of letter writing in his oeuvre.
