Laughing Man Coffee
In 2009, Hugh visited the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia, to film a documentary on coffee for a philanthropic organization. There, he met the people responsible for producing the beans whose coffee became some of the most sought-after commodities worldwide.
Originally, he was just there to support the philanthropic efforts of Australian World Vision’s documentary. But after he and his wife spent time with people in the Yirgacheffe region, he knew he wanted to make a more lasting impact on the community. Surprisingly, although also not so unsurprisingly, those individuals that we owe for the most popular goods get routinely bulldozed over by bigger companies further down the supply chain. Hugh believes that ending global poverty may be largely achieved in part by addressing the unfair coffee trade.
