Red Wine Gelato: A Taste of Italy

cyj_castello_di_velona_gelato

There’s nothing better than relaxing in the Tuscan countryside with a glass of red wine. While we do love Italian cities, there’s a certain charm that comes with Tuscany that you can’t find anywhere else. And what’s a trip to Italy without tasting gelato too? Sadly, we can’t always be living it up in Italy. But we can make a red wine gelato to bring the flavors of Italy home with us.

Where Does Red Wine Gelato Originate?

This red wine gelato recipe originates in, you guessed it, Tuscany. To be more specific, the hillside town of Montalcino in Siena. We used Brunello di Montalcino, a red wine that critics claim to be the best in Italy. It’s made with 100% Sangiovese grapes, which are known for their intense flavors. We all know it’s excellent in a glass, but it’s even better in this homemade gelato. Don’t believe us? Give this recipe a try and thank us later.

Red Wine Gelato Recipe

Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients

1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup Brunello di Montalcino

Directions

In a medium bowl combine milk, sugar, cream and red wine.

Stir the mixture until the contents have combined fully.

Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker. The settings will be different based on what machine you’re using. Please refer to your ice cream maker’s instruction book.

Churn until thickened and creamy. It should take between 15-20 minutes to get the desired texture. You may feel it needs more time to make the perfect red wine gelato, so this estimation can vary.

Note: If you want to make more than 2 servings of gelato, make them in separate batches. Alcohol doesn’t freeze so adding a large quantity may result in the gelato not setting properly.

And there you have it – the perfect red wine gelato recipe thanks to Brunello di Montalcino. After eating this refreshing gelato, we have no doubts that you’ll be looking at the next flight out to Tuscany. But until then, enjoy this little taste of Italy from the comfort of your own home.
