Don’t tell us you think Greenland is much too remote and hard to reach. Maybe this was the case until recently. But on June 14, 2025, United Airlines launched a nonstop flight between the US and Greenland. There hasn’t been one since 2008. Now, if you want to go to the largest island in the world, it’s a quick and easy 4.5-hour flight from Newark. Can you believe it’s actually quicker than flying to LA?
The schedule for Greenland flights
United Airlines now flies between Newark and Nuuk in Greenland, twice a week, on Saturdays and Tuesdays. The departure from Newark is at 11:31 AM (EDT) and the departure from Nuuk is at 6:39 PM local time.
Note that it is a seasonal service that will end in September, so don’t dilly-dally if you want to visit the Arctic this year. That said, if it’s not in the cards this year, the route is set to resume next year — so you can always plan ahead.
The Service
On this route, United Airlines flies a narrow-body Boeing 737 Max 8, capable of accommodating up to 165 passengers. Unfortunately, there’s no first-class or business-class seats on this route, but the premium economy options are decent for such a short flight.
A return economy seat ticket should cost between $1,200 and $1,500, but that will go up (the flights aren’t frequent, the plane is on the small side, and the destination is trendy, making for a hike in price.)
Why fly to Greenland?
Greenland is irresistible for its raw, untouched beauty and unmatched remoteness. Far from crowded resorts, it offers privacy and prestige in equal measure—glacier fjords, iceberg cruises by private yacht, and helicopter flights over UNESCO-protected ice fields. For all of that, Greenland is the ultimate frontier. We’re talking rare wildlife encounters, luxury lodges with views of drifting icebergs, and a Michelin-starred culinary experience at KOKS (one of the world’s most remote fine-dining destinations.) You can kayak beside humpback whales, heli-ski virgin slopes, or charter Arctic expeditions that few have ever attempted. It’s a place to disconnect from the world and reconnect with something majestic, and profoundly rare.
