Few things are more disheartening than seeing a beautiful and historic tourist destination marred by purely functional modern architecture. Yes, travelers need to be accommodated, but do new hotels have to be so ugly and incongruous? Luckily for the people of Kyoto and the many visitors who travel to the ancient Japanese city, Capella is doing things differently.

Luxury hotel brand Capella will soon open Capella Kyoto, one of two locations to be launched in Japan in 2025. And instead of slapping a giant tower of concrete and glass in the centuries-old city, it’s creating a four-story contemporary hotel that is in line with the vernacular architecture – inside and out.

Architecture + Design

The low-lying edifice with its decorative wooden eaves looks simple and inconspicuous in Kyoto’s urban landscape — and that’s the point. Capella Kyoto wants to blend into the historic Miyagawa-chō district, known for its geisha houses, kabuki theatres, teahouses, and temples. Nobody wants to stick out like a sore thumb, right? Especially when your next door neighbor is 13th-century Kenninji Temple.

But Capella’s efforts to assimilate seamlessly go beyond its exterior facades. Inside, guests are immersed in an abundance of Japanese artworks and artifacts, as well as a multitude of traditional design elements – starting with sliding screen doors and a bamboo courtyard. Yes, Capella Kyoto is a modern hotel, but it managed to respect and integrate the local cultural heritage fully. Kudos.

Amenities

Capella Kyoto might look modest but it packs a punch. It features 92 rooms and suites, three restaurants, an inner courtyard, a multi-story rock garden, a ballroom, and a spa.

The Auriga spa offers Japanese wellness treatments, as well as an onsen experience for those who wish to give traditional bathing a chance.

Food + Drinks

Capella Kyoto is home to three distinct restaurants to cater to every taste, occasion, and budget. A brasserie and pâtisserie located around the inner courtyard, a Japanese restaurant, and a casual omakase-style venue that focuses on contemporary cuisine.
