A New Boutique Hotel in Rome

Hotel Vilon Rome - Boutique Hotels Rome

We love the Grande Dame hotels that impress you from the moment you arrive. But we also like the hidden gems: The boutique hotels that give you the perfect combination of luxe rooms, personalized service, and a place that feels like home. Now, there’s a brand-new hotel in that category, and it’s in Rome — where cool, quaint spaces are on the rise.

Just a coin toss from the Baroque Trevi Fountain, Umilta 36 is a sparkling new hotel paying homage to decades past. At the same time, it’s also a mid-century modern masterpiece: Intimate, warm, minimalist — the feel is understated luxury. Boutique hotels and Rome are beginning to go hand-in-hand, and Umilta 36 demonstrates the creativity and elegance of the boutique experience. And the location is hard to beat.

Decor

Modern-eclectic interiors create a great, high-end ambiance, as well as a more relaxed aura for those who prefer something out-of-the-box. More is more with the decor, as colors (blue especially) and textures layer over geometric furniture in the rooms, and across the floors and walls throughout the hotel. A huge marble staircase and big wooden doors beckon in the public spaces. The hotel also maximizes its smaller spaces: Shedir Collection, the team behind the new hotel (and J.K. Place) designed strategic ornamental details like wood paneling to extend the ceilings upward, opening up small areas.

Rooms

Umilta 36 has 47 guest rooms, 17 of them with furnished living rooms and kitchenettes — and two with rooftop terrace views. Each room has a large walk-in closet, important for that polished, European travel wardrobe you’ve been dying to wear this fall. Other elevated touches include double sinks, a large TV, and ample seating.

Dining and Other Details

The hotel is home to Argentinian restaurant, El Porteno, the Dandy Cafe, and the Terrace bar. The cafe serves Italian favorites all day while the terrace bar serves aperitivo and small bites, and of course, a stellar view. (This is where you’ll often want to be.)

If in Rome for work, Umilta is a cool and under-the-radar choice. (Long stays are also an option.) The three dining areas provide the opportunity to make friends right in the heart of the Eternal City. And, the Dandy Cafe is a prime location to catch up on e-mails.

But ultimately, Umilta 36 works well for everyone. Couples and friends who have been to the major hotels in Paris, or who are looking for the European boutique alternative will enjoy the amenities and expert service. At nearly $600 a night, you may not have as much room in each suite as you could find elsewhere in the city for that price point. But, the atmosphere created by the Golden Age architecture and design and a timeless feel make it a place to be. And, when in Rome…
