Some people really are good at everything. Oscar-winner Baz Luhrmann has taken his film-making skills, and translated them to a new bar in NYC. And as you would expect, it’s dramatic. It’s opulent. And it may just be your next date night spot.
Overview
Baz Luhrmann needs no introduction. Being a visionary filmmaker known for his opulent and theatrical style (we’ll happily introduce anyway), it’s no surprise that he brought his flair for cinematic maximalism to the heart of New York’s East Village with the opening of Monsieur. This band-new cocktail bar (it just opened at the end of January) is a collaboration between Luhrmann, his Oscar-winning wife and designer Catherine Martin, and hospitality expert Jon Neidich. It was apparently while touring castles in Cologne for Luhrmann and Martin’s upcoming Joan of Arc film project that Monsieur was truly visualized. And it really does feel like you just walked in to one of Luhrmann’s films.
Atmosphere
Madonna specifically checked it out during it’s first week, so Monsieur is obviously already a scene. The vibe is one of gothic grandeur and rock-and-roll decadence. It’s quite literally a self-proclaimed “medieval lair,” on the bar’s Instagram. And as the legend states, you will be hosted by an enigmatic and mythical (albeit fictional) impresario — known aptly as Monsieur. (Sure, it’s extragavant — but what did you expect?)
The bar’s interiors are a stylistic hybrid: there’s hand-carved walnut millwork, taxidermied birds, pink stained glass windows, candelabras, and custom tapestries. A suit of armor is enshrined in a glass case, and Murano chandeliers dimly light the dramatic ambiance.
Food + Beverage
As with any cocktail bar, the drinks at Monsieur are the main event. There’s a choice for most taste preferences — the gin-based The Lemon, the vodka-based Honey Ginger, as well as a tequila-based option, a Mezcal and passionfruit signature drink, and an Espresso Martini with banana. The non-alcoholic preferences are also not overlooked, with a fruity option and cold-brew-based alternative.
And of course, there are a few bites — a Tuna Tartar, Maitaki Tempura, Osetra caviar on potato cakes, Foie Gras, and even a grilled cheese.
