When in Paris, should you eat Italian? With the arrival of Gigi, the answer may just be yes. This is where to put on your very best and take in the show. The French have never been so chic, and that truffle pasta…. Here’s the scoop on what just may be the most glamorous restaurant in Paris.
Overview
If you’re a regular in the South of France, Gigi was your new go-to spot in Ramatuelle this past season. That sleepy town is the center of the summer beach club action in St. Tropez. Right out of the gate, Gigi was so well-received during its first summer season that the owners decided to conquer Paris, too. Of course, the competition is fierce there, so these things don’t always work out. Undeterred, Gigi opened this past fall on the seventh floor of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on the Avenue Montaigne, instantly becoming a contender for the title of most glamorous restaurant in Paris. At some point, you’ve probably been to Manko, another restaurant/club on the ground floor. Gigi is a different kind of venue — a grown-up supper club that’s one of the hottest scenes in Paris now.
Atmosphere
Dripping in glamour, Gigi is one of those restaurants that can impress even the most blasé Parisians. The ride up to the seventh floor in the rickety elevator may have you questioning what you’re getting yourself into. But then the doors open up into the penthouse restaurant, and you feel like you’ve entered the Golden Age. Thanks to its top-floor location, you get an unobstructed view of the Eiffel tower.
Gigi is open for lunch and dinner, and the views impress both times. In the evening, you get a direct look when the Eiffel tower lights up hourly and sparkles, like the scene at Gigi. If you think that true Parisians don’t care, they do. The terrace is filled with chic locals taking selfies and Instagram video at the top of the hour the moment those lights go on.
Dress to Impress
The music, whether it’s a live cabaret performance or a house mix, is a throwback to the days you dressed for dinner. The guests look like they walked off the Chanel runway, and the space is decorated like an elegant old-school supper club. This is where you go to be in the mix of Parisian high society.
Food
For a place that is the most glamorous restaurant in Paris, the food is actually good. That is, you come here for the scene. Admittedly, this won’t be the best Italian food of your life, but it’s a nice break if you’ve been eating French all week. The Bellini Bar up front serves up thin-crust pizzas, plus bites like truffle arancini and prosciutto platters. The main restaurant goes glam with Russian caviar, black truffle shaved on anything you want, pastas and impressive whole fish. There’s also a lamb shoulder for two and a steak in Barolo sauce that are noteworthy.
Service
Parisians waitstaff may not be known to provide the most welcoming service, so you would expect to get some attitude. We don’t know if the pandemic has made people nicer, but we received nothing but love. The host and maitre d’ could not have been more welcoming. Waitstaff was attentive, friendly, and efficient — seemingly happy to be at work and there to help you have a good time.
Overall
7.5/10. We would definitely go back, especially when we’re in the mood for the most glamorous restaurant in Paris.
