The Location: Malibu, California
The Price: 200 Million
Leave it to Bey and J to purchase the most expensive home in California. Jay Z and Beyonce’s Malibu house was priced initially at $295 mil. However they got it for a pretty good discount from art collector Bill Bell, if you have an extra $200 million laying around. But at even a third under asking price, the sale solidified a real estate deal worth the second most ever in the country.
Bought in the 1990’s by Bill’s father, the then $14.5 million mansion underwent a serious modernist renovation. The home has a prestigious history. It was designed by world renowned Japanese architect, Tadao Ando. Ando’s style has been both a marvel, and criticized. Its concrete heavy exteriors could seem fortresslike. However, stunning details like a reflecting pool are hard to dismiss. Ando is also designed Kanye West’s house nearby. However unlike Kanye who completely destroyed Ando’s creation, Jay Z and Beyonce’s Malibu house has stayed in tact.
Jay Z and Beyonce’s Malibu house’s brutalist concrete structure make it look like more of an art gallery than a living space. Bell’s famous modern art collection (housing notable Koons, Duchamp, and Warhol pieces) aligned right with the aesthetic. This modernest aesthetic the fact that it’s by famed architect Ando is one of the aspects of the house that Jay Z and Beyonce reportedly loved.
As far as views go, Jay Z and Beyonce’s Malibu house also overlooks the Pacific Ocean. At a house this level, it has its own private beach as well as an infinity pool. Spread over eight acres, 40,000 sq ft of residence carries many details.
Malibu has a reputation like no other. The Carters’ home is surrounded by multi- million dollar mansions whose views all look out onto the ocean. Although, the secluded beach town vibe is only part of what makes Malibu desirable. Only 25 miles from LA, Malibu gives easy access to the city.
