Best of NYC Rooftop Restaurants

Top of the World: RH Rooftop Restaurant

Good for: Whether you’re dining a deux, in a group of 4-5 friends, with your young family, or solo, the RH Rooftop (which does not take reservations) is come one, come all.  To avoid the one-hour waits though, make that coming during the weekdays, which are much more civilized.

Atmosphere: In the atrium rooftop with both indoor and outdoor space, you will find yourself asking several times, “where am I?”  You’re not hallucinating; you are at RH, baby. With light-filled glass and a rich French greenhouse feel with crystal chandeliers, this is one of the prettiest, most elegant yet comfortable places in town to gather with friends over a nice long lunch.

Why we like it:When we first got wind of a new café opening up in Restoration Hardware stores like Chicago, we were admittedly skeptical. Though we’re longtime Restoration Hardware fans and loyal customers, it wasn’t exactly a spot we would think of as a destination for the day. But, with the re-branding of Restoration Hardware into a lifestyle concept, and calling themselves RH accordingly, we’ve bought in hook, line, and sinker. RH recently opened in the Meatpacking district to the tune of $50 million in a brand new 90,000 sq. ft. space building that was once the beloved Pastis. Naturally, this is exactly where we like to spend our Saturdays, wandering through the five stories of gallery space. And let us clarify “gallery space:” you can’t buy anything here, but rather, you order it online with their sales associates. It sounds crazy, but it seems to be working. Last time we tried to queue up for a salesperson to check out online, we were told the wait was 45 minutes. Few restaurants and store concepts could rise to this level of disruption, but the RH concept just may fit the bill. Take note, Apple – this is how to re-invent your space.

What to order: The crudité is a must; in fact, they should just put it on everyone’s bill automatically. Save some of that buttermilk ranch dip for their french fries, because potatoes are also a vegetable. The arugula salad with roasted grapes is a standout, as is the RH burger.
