Printemps is the New Barneys

Natali Spasova, Staff Writer

When they said Paris’s Printemps was coming to NYC, it didn’t quite inspire the subway ride downtown. But then, Printemps threw open its doors and completely changed the landscape of shopping. It’s not just the new Barneys; it may actually be better.

History

Printemps is not just a brand — it is a French institution, right up there with the Arc de Triomphe or the Eiffel Tower. And we’re not saying that lightly. Opened in 1866 by Jules and Augustine Jaluzot, it was the first store to introduce the concept of a seasonal sale. It stayed true to it’s name — Printemps (“Spring” in French) — so everything needed to be new and fresh. But there are many other “firsts” in this picture. After a fire gutted the original building, Printemps rebuilt with an exposed metal facade — seven years before the Eiffel Tower. It was also the first public space to be entirely lit by electricity, the first store entirely dedicated to menswear, and, totally deservedly, the first department store to be listed as a national monument. And now, it is the first department store in New York that is anything but a department store.

Printemps in New York

There has been a Barney-sized gap left in New York since 2020. So Printemps’ entrance to the Manhattan shopping scene is a welcome one. New York’s Printemps is a one-of-a-kind, unique experience that can be found nowhere else. It is situated in the historic, 50-story building One Wall Street, and it marks a new chapter for Printemps as much as it does for New Yorkers. Leading this project is Laura Gonzalez, a multi-award-winning, Paris-based architect who was tasked with combining Printemps’ history with New York’s “no boundaries” mindset. The result? 54,000 square feet of historic art-deco with strong colors and a cozy atmosphere. It’s practically a date between Paris and New York. And so far, NYC is loving it.

It is grand and intimate at the same time. Think of the iconic Red Room, covered with 2.5 million red and gold tiles (now filled with designer shoes), combined with small eateries, like the 25-seat Salon Vert raw bar. Think pink marble stairs and two-story windows. It’s fun, and it’s new.

Services

You can spent a few hours, half a day or a full day at Printemps, and it has everything to keep you entertained the whole time. It’s not just shopping; it’s a full dining-shopping-entertaining-spa experience. There is a Champagne bar, a Raw bar, a Red bar, and a coffee shop. A fine dining restaurant. And over 50% of brands that are exclusive to Printemps — you won’t find them anywhere else in the US. And then there’s the spa. You can have a shopping break for a rejuvenating treatment, or sip champagne while browsing for vintage items.
