Lake Garda

Michaela Atiae, Staff Writer

Lake Garda has always had the iconic Villa Feltrinelli that almost single-handedly put it on the map as an insider’s place. Now, a new generation of travelers is set to arrive with the opening of LXR Hotels. Suddenly, Italy’s largest lake isn’t just for the old guard anymore.

The Overlooked Cousin

For some time, Lake Como has overshadowed its quieter cousin: Lake Garda. Understandably, travelers were drawn to the celebrity hotspot (who doesn’t love the Clooneys?). But dare we say, Lake Como has become mainstream. With its growing popularity, its quiet magic no longer has the same sparkle. Lake Garda is larger and still surprisingly under-explored, with similar picturesque mountain surroundings, favorable weather, and a local food scene worth writing home about. Hilton Hotels & Resorts saw this opportunity and seized it.

Grand Hotel Gardone Lake Garda, LXR Hotels & Resorts, will open in 2027 following a multimillion-dollar renovation. The exterior of the grand hotel will be maintained, while the bulk of the reconstruction takes place inside. This property will mark Italy’s first LXR hotel.

What Can I Expect From the New Property?

While full details are yet to be divulged, here is what we know. The property lies on the north side of the lake, which translates to panoramic lakefront views and mountains that feel like gates to your own sanctuary. In LXR fashion, personalized services will have you well acquainted with the region, with an emphasis on adventure travel.

The 160-guestroom property will honor the hotel’s monumental legacy dating back to 1884. Grand Hotel Gardone has long been a key landmark on the lakefront, welcoming cultural icons like Sir Winston Churchill and Italian poet Gabriele d’Annunzio. D’Annunzio occupied a full floor of the property in 1921. In other words, if you’ve been meaning to write your novel, this is the backdrop to finally shake that pesky writer’s block. You’ll have no problem contemplating your next line, with guaranteed high ceilings and private balconies that bring the Italian spirit in. De.Tales Design Studio will lead the design, showcasing the lake through principles of light, rhythm, and spatial fluidity.

Amenities will include two signature restaurants, two bars, and a bespoke spa. The spa offers both indoor and outdoor pools. You can also make the spa your stop for gym needs, but something tells us you’re going to be doing most of your sweating on the dance floor — the ballroom dance floor. After you’ve burned off dinner, you can walk from the ballroom to an expansive terrace. There, you’ll take in the not-so-overlooked cousin that is Lake Garda and the red clay rooftops of Gardone.
