The Okavango Delta in Botswana is the world’s largest inland delta, set in the midst of an otherwise arid country. The Delta is in a constant state of flux, dependent on the season. While some parts of the Delta remain permanently flooded, others experience high water levels only in the dry winter months. During this period, the floods peak and attract animals from surrounding areas, resulting in one of Africa’s largest concentrations of wildlife. Remarkably untouched by tourism, the Okavango Delta is an ideal place to experience an authentic safari.
Unique Wildlife Encounters
Unlike other famous safari destinations, such as Sabi Sands in South Africa, where you can see the Big 5 in one day, or Tanzania for the Great Migration, a safari in Botswana offers fewer animal sightings. However, each encounter is fascinating and authentic. On a recent trip to the Delta in March, we observed a pride of 11 lions, one of whom came within 2 feet of our open jeep. We also saw adult and baby hippopotami grazing on riverbanks, the native red lechwe, and an abundance of other animals, from tsessebe to giraffes to elephants.
&Beyond’s Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge
While the morning and evening game drives and boat rides are incredible, the accommodations significantly impact the experience. This is where &Beyond’s Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge excels.
Arrival and Initial Impressions
A private boat transports you from a nearby airstrip to the lodge, allowing you to take in the Delta’s beauty along the way. Upon arrival, guests are treated to a complimentary foot massage, setting the tone for the luxurious, indulgent stay ahead.
Each suite at the lodge is a two-story retreat with a private game viewing deck on the top floor, complete with an additional king-sized bed and mosquito netting for those who wish to sleep under the stars. The suites boast generous bathtubs, al fresco showers, and the largest private plunge pool among the seven safari lodges I have visited. The main lodge area offers plush seating, wifi for the internet-addicted, and fabulous views of the Delta.
Unparalleled Service
What truly elevates the stay at Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge is the exceptional service. Too tired to come to the main lodge for coffee before the morning game drive? No worries, your butler will bring it to your room with your 5:30 am wake-up knock. Have dietary restrictions? The extremely talented chef will not only adhere to them but might surprise you with a crocodile-shaped dinner roll if you like them! Need a massage? Of course. The camp manager, Joyce, has a remarkable sense of what makes a lodge excellent, setting the proper tone for her entire staff with warm words and a friendly smile.
An Unforgettable Experience
A safari in the untouched Okavango Delta, combined with the luxurious and customized experience at Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge, is an unforgettable experience – the trip of a lifetime.
