Today we are in Lisbon, one of the most unique capital cities in Western Europe. Lisbon pre-dates London, Paris and Rome, yet is a city that is far less-hyped. Lisbon is a grand old city with white cobblestone streets, regal buildings and a raw grittiness that gives it a beautifully sad atmosphere. It’s no surprise that the Fado, which is the Portuguese version of the blues, is an intricate part of their culture.
I have fond memories of wandering the Barrio Alto galleries during the day, which turn into the center of Fado nightlife well into the wee hours of the morning. When I get asked for a recommendation for a quick weekend trip from New York, Lisbon is near the top of the list. I hope that you have the chance to experience it too.
All the best,
