Hotel: Blackberry Mountain
There’s no need to find yourself in the Great Smoky Mountains and not stay in a five-star retreat. Because you don’t rough it. And working from the mountains for a few days this August before you head back to the office is a good idea. That, and if there is a reason besides Nashville to go to Tennessee, Blackberry Mountain is it.
We say this August because you’re SOL if you’re trying to get to Blackberry Mountain for June or July. Or even Thanksgiving for that matter. Blackberry Mountain and its sister property, Blackberry Farm, are booked solid. So, if you have your heart set on 5,200 acres in the Smoky Mountains, you may want to get right on it.
The Rooms
We never thought we would see a rush on accommodations in Tennessee, yet the Blackberry portfolio of hotels has made this a hot spot of sorts. It’s not necessarily easy to get to, but that’s part of the appeal. You check into Blackberry Mountain and you’re there to unplug in nature. With WiFi, of course. The accommodations are a combination of stone cottages, homes and cabins. They really went all out on the construction, too; this is as luxurious as it gets (think Eleven Experience), with an Americana theme. Or, if you’re really into the outdoors, they can set up a special camping accommodation. Of course, it’s more like luxury glamping, complete with a private chef.
The Blackberry Mountain Adventure
If you decide to leave your accommodations (some people check in and totally hide out for the weekend in their rooms), then the mountain is your oyster. Into mountain biking? Or maybe you feel like climbing a mountain. They’ve got guides for that. Blackberry Mountain is a dream for those who are into the outdoors and up for a calorie burn.
Besides the adrenaline rush, Blackberry has a top-notch holistic program that goes beyond yoga. There are “healing” retreats and wellness journeys with experts to help you sort it out. This is an optimal resort for couples and anyone looking for a reset in life.
Get on the Road
There are numerous ways to get to Blackberry Mountain, and the easiest is to fly into Knoxville. From there, you’re 45 minutes from the resort. If you’re coming from New York, the drive is 11 hours, so you have to really want to be in the car. You can also do a hybrid and fly into Atlanta and make the three-and-a-half hour or so drive from there. How you get to Blackberry depends on how much palate you have for the open road. It’s last call for full work from home, so like Ferris Bueller says, make it count.
