Add this to the category of restaurants that you can’t get into unless you have more than 1 million Instagram followers, are dialed in high into the scene, or your name is Taylor. But once you’re past the front door, it’s more than just hype.
Overview
The Eighty Six is a sceney, Art Deco steakhouse tucked into the historic bones of 86 Bedford Street in New York’s West Village, where literary ghosts meet caviar dreams. The Eighty Six is the latest venture from Catch Hospitality Group, taking over the storied address that once housed Chumley’s and the Frog Club. With its name nodding to Prohibition-era slang (“86” meaning to eject someone), the restaurant pays homage to its speakeasy roots while serving up a modern twist on classic American fare.
The vibe is intimate and exclusive. There are only 35 seats, and a door policy that favors the well-heeled and well-connected. In other words, it’s not an easy place to get in to.
Atmosphere
Designed to evoke a retro-glam mood, the space is all about lacquered wood, geometric marble floors, and vintage lighting. However you imagine a steakhouse looked in the prohibition era, this is it. This less modern steakhouse, and more private supper club.
It’s a jewel box of a room — it’s ideal for date nights, power dinners, or just soaking in the West Village mystique. The crowd skews stylish and social, and the ambiance is polished, without being stiff.
Food + Beverage
Chef Michael Vignola’s menu is indulgent and unapologetically American. Expect dry-aged cuts, foie-topped filets, and premium ingredients (all the steakhouse hallmarks), but layered with more creative, contemporary touches. On the menu, you’ll find house-aged New York strip steaks, potato croquettes topped with caviar, sardine toast on olive sourdough, and a raw bar. The wine list is short and curated, with solid by-the-glass options that pair well with the rich, savory dishes.
