It seems that membership clubs are here to stay, and this one thinks they’re the most exclusive. At San Vicente, it’s all about who you know.
Gatekeeping has taken over New York City by way of private clubs. It’s not like this city hasn’t always had an air of exclusivity, but the recent uptick in private spaces makes it undeniable that there’s been a resurgence of secrecy. With celebrities constantly berated in the media, it looks like hotelier Jeff Klein saw an opportunity—and ran with it. San Vicente is the latest addition to this year’s roster of New York City private clubs—Chez Margaux, ZZ’s Club, Verci, and The Twenty Two NYC to name a few. The difference here isn’t just the need to “know a guy” to access membership. In fact, your chances are almost slim to none if you aren’t a celebrity.
Jeff Klein
This isn’t Jeff Klein’s first go-around in the hospitality world. The hotel mogul has been in the throes of the hotel business, since just days after graduating college back in 1993. We’ll give you the synopsis. Klein started as a Bellman at The Franklin Hotel in New York City and quickly rose to the position of hotel manager. When the hotel closed, Klein’s former boss asked him to join a new business venture: The City Club. The office building received a face lift and became a stylish boutique hotel. Three years later, he flipped another space in desperate need of TLC—the Argyle hotel on the Sunset Strip of West Hollywood. The Argyle became The Sunset Tower, and the famed Tower Bar became the venue for the Vanity Fair Oscar Party for four years.
His next move cemented his fame-clad clientele, capitalizing on—you guessed it, exclusivity. Klein bought a collection of bungalows to create the private membership hotel San Vicente Bungalows. And, he started to bridge the gap of ‘club’ hangouts and hotel stays with overnight success. And now, he brought his concept to the East Coast this year.
San Vicente New York
Now that you’re caught up, here’s what you need to know about the New York City San Vicente location. The club opened its doors at the end of March. However, the renovations had been in discussion since acquisition in 2022. Klein has taken over the West Village’s Jane Hotel, and while keeping a portion of it open to the public, has dedicated a large portion of the space to San Vicente. Private entrances mean even a guest of the building cannot gain access without a membership.
Membership
Did we mention how exclusive it is? Being wealthy doesn’t necessarily help, in this case. Membership started with invitations to already loyal West Coast members and their recommendations. But even that didn’t necessarily get you in. The Membership Committee evaluate applications monthly, and a recommendation doesn’t guarantee a spot either. Ironically, one of the most coveted reservations in New York right now is open to member guests of up to six people at a time. So, if you happen to know a celebrity fairly well, you can see the space without paying dues. Guest access does come at a price, with constant contact with the member who brought you, a sticker over your phone camera, and absolutely no discussion of what you’ve seen inside. But, if you’re influential in the world of art, you might be able to apply on your own.
Vibe
The club is curated by British designer Rose Uniacke. The hotel’s ballroom has transformed into a sultry dining space with live jazz and a fireplace. Daytime meals are served in an octagonal tower room with access to outdoor terrace gardens overlooking the Hudson. The club also offers a Drawing Room, sushi bar, Billiards Room and bar. There is also a workspace Studio, private event rooms, a fifty-seat Cinema, and a basement Disco. If an overnight stay is needed after a few too many rounds at the bar, rooms are available as well.
